It takes about 5 seconds to go from room temp to 205 F in almost boiling water. Not great but okay.
The backlight doesn't stay on long, about 10 seconds. Any longer would probably kill the battery prematurely anyway, so I understand that.
If you don't own a thermometer of any kind, this one is worth $4, IMO.

It's magnetic, so you can stick it nearby where you cook for easy access. I keep mine in a sealed sandwich bag, magnetically attached to the side of my stove's air exhaust/hood. So far, it has worked pretty well; my only complaint is that the light turns off too soon. But for four bucks, it's quite decent, in my opinion.
