I think low-light capability in most newer Sony cameras are practically identical or vary only in terms of fractions of a stop. I recommend looking up "photons to photos" and checking their charts there. The a7iv and a7cii have nearly identical performance. Sony cameras since the a7rii and a7iii have used BSI sensors which improve low-light capabilities. Generally, the more megapixels, the slightly worse low-light performance you get, so a7cii should be a little bit better in low-light in compared to the a7riii. The a9 and a1 series use stacked sensors or other setups which should give them better performance (not sure), but that's another playing field.

If you need the megapixels though, just go for the a7cr. There is no substitute for that. If you don't need them, definitely go for this and spend the extra on some f/1.2 lens imo. Low-light performance only really increases substantially with a larger aperture, larger sensor, or new technologies, but I haven't heard of any breakthroughs lol
i think that "the more megapixels, the slightly worse low-light performance you get" is a myth came from HTC era where they were unable to provide a higher MP count on their flagship phones, so instead they advertised bigger pixels.
since then, numerous experts have been trying to validate that claim but it turns out to be not true with the same generational sensor technology. i am happy if you are able to find one that shows otherwise.
i think that, in theory, the less pixel implies less sensor read noise, but then again, does that sensor read noise is the actual dominate noise source in the entire process?
oh, and i have a cannon R6, so i was a falling victim to this claim
here is the R5 vs R6 comparison, do you really think the R6 has a noticeable edge in the high ISO compere to R5?

Sure, check the photons to photos charts like I said in the comment you replied to. R6 shows slightly greater dynamic range and better shadow recovery than the R5, and on the dpreview comparison, the R5 clearly has greater color noise at very high ISOs. I said "slightly worse" so not really a huge difference. The fact is that more pixels = smaller photosites = less light, it is not just a lie made up for advertising. In 2025 I'd say most BSI sensors are good enough and I'd use any of them in any light situation, as the differences are fractions of a stop... I wouldn't get a lower megapixel camera exclusively for better low-light performance. No shade if anyone uses a high-MP camera for low light photography... that's what they're made for

The latest firmware 2.00 just added a couple of interesting new features to this camera. https://www.sony.com/electronics/...e/00301105

Greentoe is always my favorite way to determine this. Once you move that meter closer to the green zone, the closer you are to knowing what price you may be able to get that body for.

When I snagged my A7r3a years back, Adorama was clearing them out between Cyber Monday and New Years in 2021 for sub $2000. I bid on Greentoe for $1800 and hit paydirt.

This was not an isolated incident, as I snagged an a7c in August that year with the kit zoom for the same price.

They will give you a price that includes tax, which is nice, with shipping included.

I think you hit the nail on the head with all the a7 series (post a7ii) are going to be good in low light, with some being better at pixel level than others.

I use DXO Photo Lab 4 Elite, and even though it is now a fairly old version Prime denoising still cleans up noise like a champ.

Of course, the a9 and a1 series bodies will perform better in low light--and for the price, they better.

As for the recent influx of f1.2 lenses--incredible glass. If I could justify it, I would probably have to snag one of those beasts.

But in true Slickdeals fashion, I pluck older used lenses like the Zeiss 35 1.4 and 55 1.8 for 1/3 of what they retailed for originally, snag an open box Tamron 28 1.4 for $110, and adapt an old 200 2.8Lii I snagged for $350 off eBay. I don't shoot HS football anymore, so no need for a9 speed... but if I need that Canon to focus like it's supposed to I do have a 7D that will push it. My kid is not fancy, but if I'm going to spend $2K+ on a lens it will be on the 200 F2 L. It's one of those crushes I never quite got over.

I would like to point out that I obviously do not have the fictional Tamron 28 1.4, rather, I have the 24 2.8. My apologies.

It has been a few years since I researched low-light performance in mirrorless bodies, so I'm genuinely curious as to how the a7cii would stack up to my a7riii shooting indoors in low light.
I remember the head-to-head indoor low-light comparisons between the a7iv and the a7riii slightly favored the a7iv back in the day, so does the a7cii give inferior results in this regard?

Mind you, I'm far from unhappy with my older but still very good camera--but I do miss the portability of my a7c. I switched bodies to get back to the 42mp sensor, which I also had in my old a99ii. The bigger sensor was needed for cropping at the time. While I don't know I would ever go back to a 24mp FF sensor, I think the 33mp sensor is a good compromise in size.

It seems like it makes the most sense to bite the bullet and just spend more money on the a7cr if I want the best of both worlds, but I guess like most people on Slickdeals I do like to save money when I can.

Thanks for any further insight.
the lowlight concern with this camera and the a7cr isnt with the IQ from noise or DR or anything - its with banding under artificial lights that completely renders any image useless due to lacking a full mechanical shutter. you can only get by this issue by using very low shutter speeds which may or may not work depending on your situation but if you do a lot of indoor shooting, its def a challenge.

Definitely recommend. The A7c2 is awesome. Depending on what you're capturing the most common lens people usually buy is the Sony 24-50 f2.8, Sony 20-70 F4, Sony 40MM f2.5, Tamron 28-75 f2.8.
