Scorched Earth on MS-DOS is the original. Came out in 1991. Loved playing it in the after school computer class in elementary school.

I prefer the term Spiritual Successor. It's a "clone" in the same way that every FPS is a clone of any preceding FPS as the mechanism is similar.

First game similar to this that I remember was artillery duel on Atari 2600. It was on one of those xonex double ender with Cheluck Norris game.

Cannon Fodder on Macintosh was released in 1988. Maybe something even earlier than that, I don't know, but that's at least one similar game that predated Scorched Earth.

I just wanted to say thanks for posting this. I didn't realize it existed on the switch but was a favorite of mine 30 years ago. I've now been able to introduce my 9 year old to it, we've been playing against each other, and it's been awesome. Now I'm pushing my siblings to get it so we can play together just like when we were growing up.
