Fanny packs are now a thing again. I'd get one with a high rated denier material so it cannot be cut from the bottom and you ending up with stolen personal items.

Anyone willing to slash at you at that point, the last thing you want is resistance. If they have gotten a cutter/knife between you and the pack, the last thing you want is them fighting with the strap and getting frustrated... Because the next place that blade is going is possibly into your abdomen.

If they have a knife on the strap, best course of action is to let them have it, and then grab pepper spray... or more potent devices... from wherever you conceal it.

This is largely hypothetical. Such attacks are rare. Fanny packs identify you as more likely to be a tourist, and pick pocketing is how they get you.
