This seems expensive. The same seller on eBay has similar MBPs for less money. Also in this case, "refurbished" is a fancy word for "used". There is no additional guarantee or protection for this refurbished product like there would be from Apple directly.

Yep... really not a particularly good discount for prior gen 'refurb'.
For reference (not a 1:1 comparison obviously), I'd gotten a NEW 14" M1 Max with 64GB/2TB for $2200 (~$3800 MSRP) back in late 2023 from B&H photo (via slickdeals, of course).
I bought from this seller before. It came sealed in a brown paper box that looks like original. I search ip the serial and it came as as an AS-IS set, which i believe is returned apple devices or end of product run sets that were sold by apple to a liquidator like bright star. It looks brand new, just that it doesnt come with apple warranty nor allow you to buy apple care plus
