If you have "Powerload" you don't take off the cap. You put a small amount into one hole and then it comes out the other hole. You pull it to make it even on both sides and then press the load button and it retracts it in. https://youtu.be/l_CBChVe9ws you only need to take the cap off if it retracts all the way in.

Maybe I am doing it wrong? I take the cap off and load the line. The areas you press in to pop the cap off are difficult.

The old Ryobi I'm trying to replace has a feature where you turn the head to access a wheel to use it as an edger. Ego doesn't offer anything like that?

I have only needed to take the whole cap off when it was jammed, but I thinkthat was because I bought a bad batch of line. Now that that spool of line is gone, I rarely have any problems. I've been using mine for about 6 years now though and that was the only time I had problems.
