Also, when the difference is ~$12 I'd much rather book directly with the airline than through a third party and potentially get the run-around if there's an issue.

I visited in the late June - early July. Daytime highs were between 50 and 60 everyday. Some sun, some clouds, some windy periods (particularly outside of towns), and a little bit of rain over the entire week. The weather didn't affect our activities at all.
That said, Iceland has a reputation for having very unpredictable & volatile weather. I didn't experience that in June-July... but I visited a second time, in February, and I definitely experienced it then. Extreme winds, heavy snow that would blow through in 15 minutes, etc.
But hopefully it's less of a problem in May than it is during the winter.
