while I used to love alt.binaries in the mid-late nineties, what is the modern-day reason for using this over VPN'd P2P or direct downloads?

There's a bit of a learning curve here, much depends on what you're trying to do and with what equipment. Have you looked at your statement? They nuked the deal and raised their prices almost a year ago. And how is this "really expensive"? NewsDemon is only $24 a year, that will set you back an extra 33 cents more a month. 🤣

I've been using NewsDemon for exactly this for 8 years. definitely recommended.

I just buy 1TB blocks on Black Friday for $5, they last me for 2 or 3 years.
