while I used to love alt.binaries in the mid-late nineties, what is the modern-day reason for using this over VPN'd P2P or direct downloads?

Nothing. Both already were infiltrated by agents/traitors.

SABnzbd with an .arr stack. If you're trying to do what most people are trying to do with Usenet these days. Also need an indexer like nzbgeek.

There's a bit of a learning curve here, much depends on what you're trying to do and with what equipment. There are plenty of start up guides, just realize most of them are affiliates of particular providers and some of their advice may be tailored to those providers. You'll know if it's for you with a little research.

Is Usenet really this expensive nowadays? Still rocking the $19.99/year Usenetserver deal from 2019.

Have you looked at your statement? They nuked the deal and raised their prices almost a year ago. And how is this "really expensive"? NewsDemon is only $24 a year, that will set you back an extra 33 cents more a month. 🤣

That $20/yr deal includes a very good VPN service too.

I just buy 1TB blocks on Black Friday for $5, they last me for 2 or 3 years.

That NewsDemon link goes straight to the credit card entry form with no pricing info showing. What am I actually signing up for?
