As alternative I've bought several of dockers wool blend zip up jackets. A steal when on sale for $30 range.
That's part of it, for sure, but the size variances in clothing is ridiculous. My current peacoat is a Michael Kors medium and it was way too big and yet, a medium Joseph Abboud fits me perfectly. size charts at the time I bought them were similar, 40-42 chest for medium.
Even worse is when some have variances in their own products, some CK, one medium jacket fits perfectly while a medium jacket is like a parachute.

Heck yes, right now is when the good deals on winter wear happen. Buy it now, put it in the closet and you have something brand new to wear in 6 months. I got my favorite Columbia jacket for 50% off on July 4th several years ago. Also got a $30 6 or 7-ft pre-lit Christmas tree from Lowe's in June once. We still have it as a master bedroom tree. Great way to stock up on gifts for family, too. Just set aside a little bit every month for Christmas all year long and you can take advantage of these deals when they pop up.
