Best Buy and Costco have the same price. Note that Applecare+ for 3 years is $40 cheaper at Costco
$200 for proprietary storage upgrade (256 to 512) ... I had to check calendar again to make sure I am still in 2025
agreed. 256gb with no sd card is a slog.

I don't get why people get so caught up on the internal storage. I agree that starting storage at 256 and a premium $200 for 512 is comically bad in 2025, but you can easily get a 1tb external ssd for $65 with respectable speeds and reliability, plus you have a safer way to storage your most important files, just install the most used apps on the internal drive. This price for this level of performance and build quality is really great.

Worth mentioning is that this same device is available on shopmyexchange for $749/tax free if you know or are an eligible service member or veteran.

You pretty much explained why - we shouldn't have to carry around an external drive or have to pay $200 to avoid carrying one in order to get a decent amount of storage. Carrying/plugging in an external drive all the time is a hassle & ruins the minimalist Apple aesthetic, but then paying an extortionate amount for something trivial goes right along with Apple math... 🙂

WOW!!! this has to be the best bang for the buck in the laptop market in a very long time for a new laptop!!! Apple is going after the market strong, they should have done this with the first M1 chip.

Or you could get NAS, I think everyone should have one nowadays. 😀

You shouldn't, and I didn't defend that in my point, it is ridiculous the price for the upgrade, but 849 for the performance and build quality that you get is pretty great and you can easily avoid a design "flaw" by just getting an external drive. Again, not ideal but avoidable. Same applies for the $499 Mac mini.

While it's an "easy" workaround, upgradeable storage (at a reasonable price) is also a thing, and we shouldn't let Apple tell us what the only acceptable workaround is. It's good hardware, but we should still voice our opinions so they listen to us, not let them tell us what is acceptable.

I wholeheartedly agree, and that's why I have two NAS units (and a couple other servers), but they serve a different purpose than internal storage 🙂

storage is not the only upgrade between the 16/256 and 16/512. The 16/512 also comes with a better M4 chip with additional functional GPU cores.

I have two as well, and one of them that I just recently built, I use it as internal storage sometimes (I have 2 volumes, 1 with 4x SSD drives and 1 with 2x NVME's). It does require at least 2.5GB connection, but preferred is 10GB is to get the speed.

Man, you're really not getting my point, that's fine though. 256gb base I laughable in 2025.

Wow this is solid, for comparison I paid $850 for the M3 version in Dec of '24. That price point was the cheapest I've seen it go till this deal*. Not only does it match the price which I've bought it at, but it's a newer processor.

Yes that one is way better than this but not everyone can take advantage of it
