Great processor for low power draw and low operating temp. Only downside is pcie 3.0 if that matters. The kids had these in their computers for a long time. But at the current prices consider a faster 65w chip like a 5700x.

This is a nice option for people upgrading. The lack of PCI-E 4 on the CPU doesn't really matter if the MB wouldn't support it. If you want to go faster a 5800XT is a better deal than a 5700x unless you specifically want a 65w cpu. If you want lower power you can probably tweak the XT to end up better than the 5700x anyway.

Regardless, it will likely only be a problem in games with relatively high VRAM usage and which run at relatively high frame rates (e.g. Doom eternal). Just stay away from the RX 6500xt."

Yea this is a good upgrade for those not running higher end GPUs. Keeps many AM4 systems going for a while longer.
Perfect upgrade for anyone on 1st gen ryzen and motherboards that don't support PCIe 4. If your motherboard does support it just go all in on 5700x3d or at least 5800xt for price.

I'm leaning towards the 5800XT which is on sale right now costing lower than 5700x. But the high 105W power is holding me back. Is undervolting what you mean by lowering power? Can it be as low as 65W? And how safe/risky is it to run undervolted? Thanks in advance.

There are a few options.
You motherboard Bios might offer an option to set a lower power limit such as the same 65w as the 5700x. That would be the simplest but probably least performant option.
You can also go into curve optimizer either in bios or in windows and apply a voltage offset to lower power consumption with little to no decrease in performance depending on what settings end up being stable.
In the end I'd never pay more for the 5700x than the 5800xt. 105w is higher but it's not really that high. It's not a 200W+ raptor lake CPU. It can still be fine with a decent tower cooler and doesn't need a large AIO to actually handle cooling.
