Upon checking with customer support online, this does require 60 days of uninterrupted service to get unlocked. Also for someone who already has a line active, adding a new line can get the $60 plan for $40 or lower (with auto pay).

Also. embracing for the time machine jokes, I still think 16e 128gb at $299 for the phone, was a better deal and might come back - far superior processor, 8gb ram, Apple AI support, longer os update support, convenient usb-c port instead of lightning etc. These far outweigh the potential advantages from 14 plus - 256gb, dual camera, magsafe, larger screen size etc for me.
Not true for everyone/every use case, agreed. YMMV
Is this something where you can get the device, pay a month, and then bail? And if so, could the phone be unlocked? (Sorry, if this is an ignorant question, I'm a noob.)
Yeah, the policy changes since April 1st has caused a lot of confusion. I purchased the 16e precisely on April 1 and despite the policy changes being published after I bought and they are not the same for Verizon prepaid as for mnvos, I am still going to recharge another month for my 16e, given it will need me to pay ($60 - $25 monthly discount on 16e deal - $10 from auto pay = $25) only. If I don't pay for the 2nd month and Verizon refuses to unlock in lack of 60 days of service, then worst case, I will have to pay for another consecutive 60 days at a much higher rate since I will loose the $25 discount. So, for $25+tax more, I am willing to pay to avoid any such risk.
YMMV

Does the phone need to have a Verizon eSIM active on it for the device to unlock after 60 days? I'm considering activating the line on this iPhone, using it for about a week, and then transferring the eSIM to my primary phone. Will the original device still get unlocked after the 60-day period? The CSR I spoke with wasn't very helpful. Any insights?
Don't know about now, but I did a couple of iPhones from Black Friday 2023 sales. They were on Total Wireless (verizon mvno). They unlocked after 60 days even though the service had expired after the initial 30 days.

Can this be used on Verizon postpaid right away and you just lose the $60 prepaid first month?

Always confused with carrier's deals. Looks good, but taste bad.
My personal experience (and a few of my friends too) with Verizon, they offered a very good deal promotion with very confusing (small fine print) policies... in order to void the $$$ deal that they offered you. At the end, you are paying the regular price and stuck with their high subscription fees. It seems to be their tactics. So, watch out carefully when you taking the deal with Verizon. Mine issue was with the $800 rebate on the phone. The fine print stated that The SIM card cannot be swapped for the period of 180 days. Well, i went on vacation to Asia and swap out using Asia local sim... what am i supposed to do? As soon as the plane landed in US, I swapped the SIM back. I don't know when they detected that my phone SIM was swapped. They voided giving $800 back. It is such a scam.

Yes. That has recently changed for the Verizon mvno's(Total, TracFone, etc).

We'll have to see if it holds for Verizon itself.

Yes. This is exactly what we did. Did the transfer from one iPhone to another process, it ported over the eSIM data no problem. Moved my wife from an iPhone 11 to this and it was seamless, she was back up and running within about 30m-1hr (most of that time was due to the phone doing a system update).

So this phone will cost $310 + tax on the phone and + 2 month of service maintained as of this April's policy change. So I'd be looking at like $310 + 24 tax = $334. Then I have to pay for 2 months of service, with the first month being the $60 prepaid plan, that's $394 after 1st month, and if I can downgrade to a cheaper monthly plan for the 2nd month, it'd be $35 for the second month? That would make the total cost $434

Note: The tax seems to be as much as $60 for some, lower for others.

Does this sound about right?

Update: I tried to check the total at checkout and it didn't take me to a confirmation page. When I went back to the verizon site and tried adding the phone again, it's showing as out of stock. Just minutes earlier, they appeared to all be in stock. Weird. Maybe it's my zipcode.

There is no policy change. Policy is only changed for TracFone not Verizon itself.

Anyone know if the $150 cashback on new service on certain site would be applicable for this order?

You have to read the terms carefully.

My site only gives $41 for prepaid.

So Verizon is 60 days to unlock, but you only need to buy 1 month of service at $60?
