Read the reviews first. The base is plastic and not weighted, while the arm is metal. It cant hardly arch without tipping over, so plan on using the clamp instead.

Looking at the IKEA Tertial right now, I can say that each parallel bar is closer to 18", but it does not come with a base, only a clamp.

We just had to RMA one of these for no longer turning on. Just out of Amazon return window. Rerouted to Manufacturer. They are sending a replacement, but I am not holding my breath on the second one.

Unless you're using incandescent bulb, 40w led light bulb output would be equivalent to around 260w of incandescent bulb. That is very very bright for a desk lamp.
