Various Digital Retailers have Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity (eBook) by Peter Attia MD with Bill Gifford on sale for $2.99.

Thanks to Deal Hunter TattyBear for finding this deal.

Available from:About this Book:
  • #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER: A groundbreaking manifesto on living better and longer that challenges the conventional medical thinking on aging and reveals a new approach to preventing chronic disease and extending long-term health, from a visionary physician and leading longevity expert
  • "One of the most important books you'll ever read."—Steven D. Levitt, New York Times bestselling author of Freakonomics
  • Wouldn't you like to live longer? And better? In this operating manual for longevity, Dr. Peter Attia draws on the latest science to deliver innovative nutritional interventions, techniques for optimizing exercise and sleep, and tools for addressing emotional and mental health.
  • For all its successes, mainstream medicine has failed to make much progress against the diseases of aging that kill most people: heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and type 2 diabetes. Too often, it intervenes with treatments too late to help, prolonging lifespan at the expense of healthspan, or quality of life. Dr. Attia believes we must replace this outdated framework with a personalized, proactive strategy for longevity, one where we take action now, rather than waiting.
  • This is not "biohacking," it's science: a well-founded strategic and tactical approach to extending lifespan while also improving our physical, cognitive, and emotional health. Dr. Attia's aim is less to tell you what to do and more to help you learn how to think about long-term health, in order to create the best plan for you as an individual. In Outlive, readers will discover:
    • Why the cholesterol test at your annual physical doesn't tell you enough about your actual risk of dying from a heart attack.
    • That you may already suffer from an extremely common yet underdiagnosed liver condition that could be a precursor to the chronic diseases of aging.
    • Why exercise is the most potent pro-longevity "drug"—and how to begin training for the "Centenarian Decathlon."
    • Why you should forget about diets, and focus instead on nutritional biochemistry, using technology and data to personalize your eating pattern.
    • Why striving for physical health and longevity, but ignoring emotional health, could be the ultimate curse of all.
  • Aging and longevity are far more malleable than we think; our fate is not set in stone. With the right roadmap, you can plot a different path for your life, one that lets you outlive your genes to make each decade better than the one before.

Highly recommend this book. Changed my habits for over a year now. Two main points to the book. 1. there are 4 main things that kill most of us and there are things we can do to minimize the risk (exercise, lose weight, lower cholesterol, etc). 2. It doesn't matter if you live an extra 10 years if you can't walk, climb stairs, etc. so you should build muscle to do the things you want to do if you make it to 80.

You can find free summaries online but reading the book was better in my opinion.
One Sunday in church, Pastor's sermon was about forgiveness. He asked everyone in the church to stand up. Then he asked those who had any enemies to sit down. Everyone sat down but one very old woman.

"You have no enemies at all?" asked Pastor.

"Not a single one," she answered, nodding her agreement.

"Please, come up here and tell everyone how you reached such a great age without having any enemies," said Pastor. A deacon accompanied the elderly woman to the pulpit and everyone in church applauded as she slowly made her way up the steps. Pastor adjusted the microphone.

"You must have done a lot of forgiving," said Pastor. "Please, tell us your secret."

The old lady smiled beatifically.

"I outlived the bitches," she said.
Seeing the cynical comments here are really depressing because Attia is genuinely one of the best communicators of medical science I've ever come across. He actually discusses the nuances of everything, how to interpret studies, the limitations of scientific research, etc. And he's one of the few "podcast" types who actually take the time to disclose their conflicts of interest.

Eat less calories, find out what your ideal intake of calories is. Run a deficit if you need to. Why because your telomeres will last longer. Why does that matter, google it. Thanks for coming to the Ted talk and saved you a few hundred pages of reading.

General surgeon apparently. Did not finish his residency in Johns Hopkins which is interesting, which means he is unable to actually practice surgery.

haven't read the book but I'm guessing that the general jist of it has nothing to do with adding more medicines into your life

Peter Attia is a charlatan and a lot of his advice is not based on solid evidence/research. 12 supplements daily is not going to extend your lifespan.

There is some great and very important information in this book. He does a wonderful overview of the big 4 diseases he focuses on in the book (Metabolic Syndrome/Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, Cancer, and Alzheimer's disease) and what can be done to prevent the progression of these diseases. I really enjoyed and thought he did a great job on this part.
However some of his other recommendations are questionable and not applicable to real world medicine (medicine 2.0). While current medicine definitely has it's flaws, he practices in a fantasy world of only ultra wealthy patients. The ultra aggressive use of labs and other diagnostic testing is not applicable to the general population. He also skims over the potential harms of this approach (ultra aggressive colonoscopy screening every 2 years starting at 40 for example).
Overall I still enjoyed the book and think it's worth the read. You will get a great understanding of the most common chronic diseases responsible for the majority of our illnesses in our later years. It also offers some great details on how you can change your lifestyle habits to have a better chance at preventing/slowing the progression of these diseases.

This book, along with Michael Easter's "Comfort Crisis" changed my life. I strongly recommend both.
