I received one of these as a gift several years ago and I almost never use it, as it is really just too small to be practical. If I did more camping then maybe, but even then I probably wouldn't take this because of the weight. Hatchets just have such a limited number of situations where they are the right tool. My opinion is that, If you want an estwing axe, get the campers axe instead. If you want something for fireside, get the fireside friend. all of this, of course, is YMMV.
I have a wood furnace and do frequent tree work along farm fence lines, just to share my use cases.

You definitely need an axe for the axe wielding hitchhiker.

If the OP just put "Hatchet" in the title and nothing else, SD would direct thousands to the purchase page

I'm new to this concept, so maybe someone could help me understand. Is this supposed to be an axe or a hatchet?

This is a hatchet, but a hatchet is just a small axe so either term is fine to use.

Agreed, there isn't much you can really do with a hatchet that you can't do with an axe. If portability is the issue than a heavy steel version isn't ideal anyway, and a folding saw plus large knife would probably be better choices for backpacking.

All that said these are very well made and cool as can be, so if you're going to buy a hatchet you could do worse.

Came for the Patrick Bateman references, am disappoint. Be the change you want to see in the world. This looks like a perfectly suitable tool Mr. Bateman would use to cut his apples for a charcuterie board.

I've had one of these Estwing hatchets for a good 45 years. I used the hell out of it as a kid, not much in the last 30 years. It's dull as hell, but still looks pretty good. I know its probably made a bit differently now, but I'm very impressed how well it's held up.
