if you are comparing to some 14tb deals, you are getting a 5-8 year drive vs a 1 year drive. Together with slot cost($50,$150 if you buy synology), you get $10.57-17.71/tb vs $14-17.5/tb.
My slots are $50 each, I still like this deal more.

Run out of slots, have to run a second NAS or replace an existing drive sooner.

It's not irrelevant unless you have unlimited physical space, unlimited SATA connectors, and unlimited power to supply to those drives. You can't compare a 28TB deal directly to a 14TB deal on a price per TB basis and say this is a bad deal because the storage density is not the same. You'd need to take into account the full picture and cost to deploy the drive and utilize the storage for a more accurate assessment of cost.

Depending how important the data is and how wide the array is you could certainly use it for raid 5, but personally for anything this large I would go with at least something like raid 6. Losing one of these and having to rebuild would make me nervous unless it was files I could replace fairly easily.

While the likelihood of losing 2 drives at the same time is extremely small, the likelihood of losing a drive during rebuild goes up dramatically, especially if they're all from the same lot of drives with similar usage. Rebuilding an array really stresses out the drives, increasing the chance of failure. Anecdotally, an array with 16tb drives that is not in use while rebuilding will take more than a day to rebuild- these will probably take around 2 days at minimum, and the length of time goes up if the array is accessed for other workloads. RAID5 for large drives isn't recommended for this reason- the length of time required for rebuilding large drives greatly increases the chance of failure and complete data loss.
