Why can't we have nice things in the Peninsula Bay Area?

Our costcos all suck here. This is one of only 3 items left I want to buy.

It comes with a magnetic kit that allows you to affix it to the back of an iPhone, which is extremely handy if you like to record ProRes or 4K 60FPS videos. You can also use it to back up the contents of newer iPhones with a USB-C port.

iPhone OS doesn't have a way to make a backup image to save to an external drive. You could plug your phone in and backup your phone to your pc or Mac but not directly to this external. You can copy pictures, videos, documents, downloads, or other files.

Does android allow direct transfer from phone to this drive?

If you want to get the full speed of the drive you'll need a USB port labeled 20Gbps or specified to be USB 3.2 gen2x2. A USB4 port MIGHT support the 3.2 gen2x2 protocol but it's not required.
Depending on your phone model you might get only USB 2.0 speeds. Find out what your phone supports.
