No. SSDs are mechanically more durable, but are less durable in every other way.

The average number of writes for an SSD in its total lifespan is rated for what a decent hard drive is rated to handle in just one year. And the mechanical operation for hard drives is rated in hundreds of thousands, if not millions of hours.

On top of this, an SSD can't be used for cold storage, as they require power occasionally to maintain data retention. Leave a mechanical drive on a shelf for 5 years and you'll still have data on it when you power it back up.

These are just some of many reasons why large data centers are still primarily using mechanical drives and even tape for storage.

For home backups, I'd advise the same.

Is this a shuckable one or one of the ones with the soldered-to-board usb micro-b port?

"WD 2.5" Portable USB drives (Passports, Passport Ultras, Elements etc) do Not have a standard SATA Interface … they use a USB Interface only."

It's likely a direct solder. But even if it wasn't, it's still only 5400RPM.

I don't know if they changed it but these use a direct usb connection rather than a sata to usb connection, so probably not shuckable

Nice price for the capacity but transfer speed tops out at 5gb/s.

Which matters little for a mechanical drive.

Even enterprise drives are only capable of around 270MBps.

My WD passport from 2018 is not working now
When I plug in to laptop it just makes "click" sound and the fan runs fast and nothing accessible

I have so much data in the 2TB passport and do not know how to recover it

This is not a durable portable HD. Mine recently failed after about 3 years mostly sitting on my desk, used it as a backup drive. Took it to a recovery specialist and they said the read/write heads were damaged. I recommend going to an SSD if you want something portable and durable.

This is exactly what happened to mine, read/write heads are damaged and it cost about $1450 to recover the data.

They stopped carrying these at my local Sam's Club.
