If you don't mind the bed of the pickup getting a little dirty -

The "hack" is to buy their "broken bags." If the mulch has a hole in it - it's half price.

We did our entire landscaping for $1 a bag.
Bags are produced regionally, so in some parts of country you will get good mulch. Other areas will have mold, bugs, trash.

This is why the reviews are all over the place. Buy in person.

Our bags were full of sticks, styrofoam and other "filler". Ok for $2 but don't expect triple processed quality

In our Lowes they go by the quantity left in the bag so if it is broken they give only 10% and up to 50% if it is half bag.

How does this one compare to the Scotts 1.5cu-ft bags that are currently $2/per at Home Depot?

Obviously these have 33% more material compared to the Scotts, but if that extra 33% is literally trash, it's not really that great a deal. But maybe the Scotts bags are crappy, too.

I just used 20 bags of HD Scotts, no garbage or issues. I think it looks good.

I just used 210 bags of this Lowe's Sta-Green red mulch and no garbage or issues, looks very good and not the tiny HD bags, plus I saved $140 over the Scott's for the same amount of mulch

grabbed 25 bags this year. they had a few 50% off damaged bags I may go back for. had an interesting conversation with the lowes employee working the mulch area. my lowes has over 7000 bags left in inventory, it has been rainy here in Massachusetts every weekend since march. not sure how true this is, but the employee said Lowes pays $2.43 for each bag of mulch. so selling for $2/bag is just a loss leader.

Who knows but I can't imagine having a loss leader on mulch with no limit but very well could be. My guess is they are paying no more than $1.75 at most probably around $1.50 with the quantities they buy. Low margin but high volume

The reviews on the Scotts this year are atrocious. The first two pages are a mix of 1 and 2 star reviews. I popped over to the Vigoro listing which is also $2 for 2cu ft and it's full of pictures of mulch with the color washed off after their first rain. Seems like they're all terrible now? Last year I paid a landscaper who brought a truck full of mulch from a local mulch yard and it looked great for the whole season. This year I was hoping to save some money and just refresh it with bags from HD or Lowes but maybe I'll have to get some delivered instead. I used to do all my own mulching a decade ago exclusively with bags from big box stores and it was always pretty solid.

If you have Walmart+, you can add up to 8 bags to your minimum $35 order and get free delivery. They have 2 brands for $2.47 bag. One brand is 1.5 cf and the other is 2.0 cf. I was placing orders every other day during Mulch Madness. It made it easy to "spread" the work out over a few weeks. It's especially good if you don't know how many bags you'll needs so you don't over-order or not order enough and have to pay shipping for another order.

Yeah, they'll deliver them. I like getting bags delivered rather than bulk because the bulk stuff gets dumped in a giant pile in the driveway and it's hard to move into position.

Why did you put holes in all of the bags?
