I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago. This is better than just about any "starter" bass I've seen. I'm semi-pro and have been playing for over 40 years. This is really a well made bass that doesn't need any improvements. The neck is reinforced with graphite stabilizing bars. The electronics are good quality. This is great out of the box. No upgrades are needed.

I'm also home player that isn't interested in gigging. Another option is an audio interface (Focusrite Scarlett is good) and software on a PC/Mac. BiasFX does okay for bass, Helix Native (if on sale) is better than BiasFX in my opinion but more expensive, if you happen to have Logic Pro (or qualify for education pricing) it has some amp simulation capability built in. There are other amp simulation options as well. Neural Amp Modeler (not to be confused with NeuralDSP's very good but expensive options) is free. You'll need headphones (or powered studio monitor speakers) as well. Software and an interface gives you access to the included effects pedals in the software in addition to the modeled amps. After you get a feel for the style of tone you like, you can go buy whatever amp you like the sound of if you're looking for the "amp in the room" experience.

Personally, I sold the Rumble 40 I got initially. Found out I like the Orange sound and still have my Crush Bass 50.

Got mine a few days ago. Condition is very good, sticker still on pickups. Intonation was perfect or almost perfect. Neck was straight. Action was a little too low though because I have a lot of fret buzz. The frets are also sharp on the treble side. Also I'm not sure if it's a nut issue but the strings buzz a lot even when playing open strings. My 4th string also came completely torn near the saddle. It was stretched in such a way that it wouldn't hold tension so I had to buy a new set of strings right away to replace that.
My opinion: construction is very good. Setup is average to mediocre. My current issue is the sound. I'm not in love with the pickups at all. I'm having a hard time getting a smooth sound in the lower registers (precision-style) and the knobs are not labeled so every turn is a mystery. Finally, I know I'm alone in this, but I'm a fan of glossy fingerboards. This is very much satin finish so don't expect that fender feel. I'm going to try and do some recording with it, but otherwise I may sell it locally and save up for a fender.

took a gamble on the black one when it was at 175 and pretty disappointed. 200 should be the normal price on these as i see nothing better about it to put it in the 500 bracket. the frets on mine weren't sharp, but there was buzz up and down the fret board. some frets were slightly raised, but i can usually get around this by raising the action and relief a touch. however, even after setting both of these way more than Jackson factory specs, there was still buzz. looks like the neck itself is either twisted or warped or something. i'm not new to doing setups either, do all my basses for years and i know when something's off, though i don't do more advanced work with fret repair or neck repair.
even if there were no issues, it feels cheap. the tuners, knobs, and bridge all have a cheap plasticy feel to them and none of them turn smoothly. just feels cheap all around. consistent with a 200$ bass. my affinity jazz is better and would recommend that over this jackson any day.
pros-lightweight, comfy, sounds pretty good
