These are very poisonous, so not kid/pet friendly.

I know someone who was trying to trim off a few brown tips of some dieffenbachia leaves. Instead of finding scissors, they just used their fingernails to perforate the leaf to cut off the ugly bits. Their hands started feeling hot but washing wasn't helping. Got actual burns underneath their fingernails that turned into blisters, because of the dieffenbachia leaf sap. Was definitely unexpected.

The last time I bought a houseplant package from Amazon, they had a lot of little fruit-fly-y things to deal with. Might be from the moisture in the soil. Just an FYI.

You can buy yellow sticky "signs" to put in the pot to catch fliers around the plant. If they are fungus gnats, you can also sprinkle a few "mosquito bits" in the pot.

So I shouldn't make a salad with this plant?

I've got so much poison ivy growing in the yard that I was thinking of getting a goat.

Yeah mine either. But when he was about 18 months old my son was walking around and just happened to grab it and like all little kids popped it in his mouth. It was just one munch, but his lips swelled up, his mouth watered for a couple hours and it clearly hurt a lot. So yeah, not a plant to have anywhere someone or some pet might unknowingly chomp it.

Sounds like fungus gnats - a nuisance pest but not typically damaging unless there's an absolute infestation of them. As another has said, get some sticky yellow fungus gnat traps to catch the adults that can fly.
Additionally, to kill them at a young stage, water with a 'tea' made using 'mosquito bits' (or mosquito dunks) - the BTI bacteria kills fungus gnat eggs/larvae too.

Fun fact: many (perhaps even most) popular house plants have some level of toxicity to humans/animals. Pothos, philodendron, peace lily, alocasia, snake plants, aglaonema, fiddle-leaf fig, ZZ, aloe, sago palm (among the worst, and toxic for humans, too), etc...
