I heard this game was great. I really wanted to try it, but I fear it's too difficult for a casual gamer like me.

I thought the same way about Dark Souls and similar games. Then I played one last year (Remnant 2) and now that is my most favorite game of all time. You should try it. There is a reason they say "difficult but fair" about these games.

My opinion - it's my first From game. I don't think it's what I would call "too difficult", it's just way too grindy to make tiny bits of progress. The story, graphics and overall game are great, I'm just not sure I'll ever finish it. At first it seems like it's an infinite world, but I've discovered most of it, the story is somewhat pieced together because you can basically play it in whatever order you want, and it can change some of the storylines (could be a positive or negative, depending on your own preference), which means you'll miss some stuff (but adds replay value). What I have a hard time getting behind is that the mechanics are generally dreadful, so it requires constant leveling up to even match whatever enemy you're trying to defeat next to progress things, and it's such a slog to level. And it kind of has what feels like a tipping point, where you're too weak to beat the next challenge, until you aren't and then it's too easy.

Anyway, fun game, but you will need to invest a LOT of time on it and you WILL get extremely frustrated along the way quite frequently, but it's cool enough to try out to see if it's for you or not. I think for me it will be one of those games I'll go back to in a few years and maybe finish it up, but I've already downloaded some other games to play because it's just too much of a slog right now.

Spot on with your review. Also, if you're casual gamer, this game will not be for you.

This is a US copy, right?

Last time one of these went on sale when I grabbed the PS4 version, it was a European copy (PEGI-12 on the corner), and it completely ****ed my ability to get the PS5 upgrade or buy the DLC.

I'm potentially willing to buy the game again on sale to have a proper copy, but I wanna be damn sure...

It's a FromSoftware game. They are all graphically janky, and it never gets fixed. They just move on to their next project. I love their games, but they're never super polished when it comes to graphics or performance.
Now they have the money to figure it out, no more excuses. They made enough money on this game to fund many more.

I appreciate your feedback and pretty much avoided picking up this game because this is precisely how I thought it would be, and I didn't want to go through that experience. Not that there is anything wrong with such an experience; it comes down to a matter of taste (and as you correctly put it — time availability).

I pretty much had the same sentiment about Dark Souls. Every time I bring it up the fact that Dark Souls was too laborious for my taste, inevitably someone says 'Git Gud'. Unfortunately, there are too many apologists online for From Soft games, and too many people readily want to debate this. I find that so funny because there is nothing to debate here. Their games are hard, and they are VERY laborious. Some fans react as if acknowledging that fact is a slight against these games. But that's just the nature of these games. No doubt From Soft games are brilliant. When Demon Souls/Dark Souls came out, there was nothing like that in the market. They spawned a whole new genre of gameplay. No one is dismissing that fact. But that does not change the fact that Soulslike games are indeed laborious. The only question becomes whether one loves these games despite that fact. It's so clearly part of the baggage.

The other aspect of these games that garners similar opinions is their intentionally obtuse structure. There is a fair amount of stuff in every game that I'm convinced the normal person just cannot figure out themselves, unless they spend hundreds of hours in it, and dedicate their lives to it. That's also something that I feel comes down to personal preference. There was a time in my life I would open up a guide to try and figure out everything a game has to offer. But that is a time sink in itself. If one wants to finish a souls-like From soft game in a 'reasonable' time, one just has to have a guide open at all times, OR you pay in terms of time spent within the game. I find it hilarious when folks on reddit exclaim — ' You really don't need a guide for this game. Trust me, I've spent 600 hrs on it'. And I chuckle to myself thinking, 'You just made my point'.

It's no doubt one of the best games with probably the best world build and adventure experience ever. I played as a astrologer but still followed a playthrough video step by step. The game is difficult and intense. The gameplay can be very frustrating, but if you like adventure games, this game is worth a try. There are also lots of shared tips online to make the gameplay easier and more smooth.

I rage quit Dark Souls because it was so hard.

Elden Ring was very doable.
