Might snag a couple to have on hand for backpacking. They're unfortunately pretty small, the "Pro" meals are a bit better. I've also tried some other brands like Peak Refuel but those gave me insane gas to the point where I woke myself up from farting. Sample size of 1 so YMMV but I'm not repeating the trials.

The other MH deal has slightly better price per ounce (surprisingly not significantly) for bulk canisters. The hardcore ultralighters will buy the bulk stuff then reuse a pouch for cooking. https://slickdeals.net/f/18292798-mountain-house-50-off-selected-freeze-dried-food?src=frontpage

Some other tips for fellow backpackers:
Don't sleep on the breakfast stuff. They tend to be pretty hearty and inclusion of dried eggs typically means a lot more protein (main advantage being they're satiating: carbs are probably more important in back-country as far as macros). They also taste great
For more value options:
Knorr rice sides are very cheap, ~2-3 a pouch but they use a lot of water and take a lot longer to cook on active flame, which may mean more money spent on fuel if you're going extended period.
Also recommend trying some DIY recipes. Skurka's beans and rice is one of my personal favorites. Tastes better than it sounds especially in backcountry https://andrewskurka.com/backpack...os-cheese/

They're supposed to be. These aren't designed for Jane in a bunker, or Joe being too tired to cook. They're for people putting in exercise all day with no easy access to electrolyte replacement, who need more sodium than the normal D.V.

That's a popular, albeit incorrect theory. The main reason is loss of flavor in the processing. Freeze-drying loses a lot of the original flavor, just as processing OJ sucks out the vast majority of orange flavor. The sodium isn't needed to prolong the shelf life of a mylar-sealed, freeze-dried product produced in the appropriate environment, as demonstrated by the myriad other backpacking meal companies and by their lower sodium reformulations. But in general backpacking meals do need extra sodium for actual exercise, but considering a single portion is only 1/3 of a person's daily intake, it's really not overloaded with sodium. Assuming that person isn't eating the entire pouch while on the couch 'cause they're too lazy to make actual food.

It's pretty low on protein content though.
