It seems to be a nice tripod at this price, but you probably need a better ball head than Gitzo's. …

What ballhead do you all recommend to go with this? Looking to upgrade from Manfrotto.

Would have bought this if I had not recently purchased the Gitzo Series 1 Traveler with backpack that was recently on special from B&H.

The better ball head in theory are from Arca Swiss (z1), Acratech, and RRS (BH-40/55). There are several good knockoffs, such as Benro. You can look at the used market for those. You can look at thecentercolumn.com for more information.
If you are not mounting something at least as heavy as a 70-200mm f2.8, the supplied one should be able to handle that.

This 4lbs, 2 times the weight of yours, I doubt one would take it with a backpack if not getting paid or doing serious video.

Yeah - I read some comparisons and the Series 1 is highly recommended for its light-weight portability. That said, the Series 2 seems to be the most stable travel tripod being made. Perhaps both make sense in the arsenal?

A lot of weight on this tripod is spent on the extending mechanism of the joint between the column and legs. Not very smart to have a heavier head on this setting. Better to have a tripod with fixed joint when carrying heavier equipment. A 3lbs tripod from leofoto has 32mm legs, much better than this 29mm ones.

I think it is for someone who absolutely prefers the extending center column. Because the bending moment is length x force, it makes less sense to have that flexibility when you have a higher column and heavier equipment.
