You just have weed out the moronic reviews The best are the 1 star reviews because the box arrived damaged. I mean really? People are such idiots. I have the 5TB of this I bought years ago. It's been a TANK and the speeds are decent. I almost want to buy this because they are so solid.

Just a FYI I believe you can't remove the drive from this like you can on a seagate. Last heard, WD and Toshiba 2.5 external drives aren't shuckable like Seagate is. I might be wrong though.

I would never chose a spinning portable drive, in a stable and cooled environment like a nas i would be ok with spinning drives as long as in a raid array and change out the drives every 5-6 years. I don't trust anything that spins for long term use.

its like a game of roulette, sure it can work, but for how long. At least with ssd and nvme you have an idea for much can be written before failure and even then I make sure to back up to the cloud.

These kind of drives are only ok for stated use, as a game drive that you don't care to lose, cause you can always download again.

Can you play games from this like the expansion drive, or no?

This uses that double-wide microUSB 3.0 connector. I have the 5TB version and it's a solid portable drive, I just wish it was type C.

I keep a small plastic container full of various USB female to type C male connectors and use these [amazon.com] for my 5TB one.

I have the 2TB version of this (got it for $17 from Wal-Mart a few years back. Thanks SD!). For a portable mechanical it is fast as all get out. I see no need to shuck it even if you could.

For reliability, it really depend on your usage. In term of long term storage for backup, spinning hard drive may be better for SSD.

Go for HDD for long term archiving. From what I read before, SSD is not a good solution for an archive because it stores data as electric charge in its cells and the charge may eventually disappear when the SSD is offline for a longer period of time ( = couple of years). Manufactures actually guarantee one year only data retention when the SSD is offline ( = without power). Data on HDD are more persistent. The best for archive is probably tape drive which is what I heard most major companies use for archiving.
