Great deal. Smoker is excellent with some easy modifications, however the app sucks. If you are buying because of the wifi and app control, skip this and get a RecTeq or Traeger. Otherwise this is a solid choice and pretty hard to beat at this price.

Does anyone know if the 20% coupons when using Lowe's card will work on these sale items?

I'd rather not use an app anyhow. My work days are already spent staring at screens.
Can I access main features from the grill directly, eg setting temperature or reading thermometers?

What modifications do you recommend?

Yes the app is not necessary for any functionality. On the other brands where it works well, it is useful for monitoring long cooks like overnight or multi day smokes. It's entirely a convenience, not required for any functionality other than remote monitoring or control.

Mainly more substantial heat defection to give more even heat across all areas. Several companies make steel diffuser plates that help a lot for under $20. Pit Boss may have updated the design recently to make this slightly better without modification, but the whole grill is fairly thin steel to make the price point. A thicker steel deflector helps a lot.

Also if you have accuracy issues with the temperature of the grill (not the meat probes but the main cook temp) then another deflector to keep heat from flowing right to the thermometer location fixes it. Again, ready made products available that fix it for fairly cheap.

When I signed up for the card I bought several items that were on sale. Discounted all the same. I'd be surprised if this were any different, I imagine the CC stuff is coded differently than your standard coupon stacks.

Unless PitBoss has upped it's game on this style smokers, I'd avoid it. I own two from them - and upright which I absolutely love, and one I bought under the Louisiana Grills line the 1200.

The heat is completely uneven - both in areas within the smoker as well as the temp control via PID/fan. The auger is hit or miss. I've had two instances where the unit didn't shut down properly (I didn't pull power nor did I lose power) and the backdraft caused the pellet hopper to catch fire.

If not for the fact that I used it sparingly the first 2 years and it's going on 4 now, I'd drag it back to Costco and test the limits of their return policy.

I have the 850 pro. Been fantastic. No ash clean out however super easy to take grates off and shot vac it out. Not to mention if you are cleaning ash you should be cleaning the grill at the same time imo. No need for app. Think I had Lowe's assemble it as well thru dropped it off ready to turn on no regrets.
