There is supposedly a QLC variant of this drive.

It's unlikely to make a meaningful difference.

This is a low end brand. It's nowhere near the same tier as Samsung or Crucial.

The pSLC cache helps write speeds. DRAM stores a copy of the mapping table (FTL). It is most helpful for random reads. That said, it's unlikely to make a meaningful difference to most users.

No. I've had a DRAM-less SSD in my PS5 for a couple years. There is no difference between it and the stock SSD. Zero issues. DRAM is helpful for writing, but it won't affect reading the game.

To be clear, are you implying that you trust any drive to not lose your data? Because I'm pretty sure that is a bad mindset. Any data you want to protect should be backed up. Ideally 2 or more times to give 3+ copies of your data. Assuming these Orico drives are not horrific, I think you're safer to spend $300 on 3 of these than 2 of the WD Black 850X.

All that being said, I'm NOT knocking your choice to spend $30 or $50 for a drive you suspect to be more reliable. Your time is valuable, as is the piece of mind that comes with buying equipment that is less likely break. So this isn't an argument for or against this deal. I just wanted to clarify for everyone that when it comes to safeguarding data, it starts with planning and redundancy.

Hmmm, why do you say they are doing downgrades? retyre recently mentioned the one in their possession has TLC NAND, and I just pulled off the sticker on one of mine to reveal the same thing. So there are at least two confirmed TLC cases from these IG740-Pros being ordered from Amazon recently.
This [reddit.com] is why. Also, it's well documented that the O7000 was swapped from TLC to QLC, though I'm not sure that one was ever advertised as TLC.

How many drives purchased from this particular SD thread have been confirmed to be QLC? And TLC? I know about the reddit thread you have pointed out, but firsthand experience from this thread is that the drives use TLC.

I think there have been 2 reports of TLC in this thread and 1 report of QLC in that Reddit post (and possibly some reviews that I haven't dug into). Unless people are lying, it demonstrates that there are both TLC and QLC variants being sold recently.

Everyone has to make their own decisions. I've tried to lay out the facts as best I can, as well as giving my opinion. Personally, if I was looking to buy a drive like this, I'd almost certainly elect to spend the extra $6 on the Team Group MP44L.
