Do you need a hub for this or can it just be used with Alexa/Google directly?

You need a hub on all Philips hue lighting.

I need six of these for a chandelier that I currently have standard bulbs in on a smart dimmer. Even on sale, $150 for the six bulbs is steep. And I'm one of the bigger Hue fans out there...

Not if they're Bluetooth enabled, in which case I think you can pair with one of their switches. But mostly you want a hub. But there are tons of hubs cheap on eBay, because so many deals are on starter packs, people have spare hubs. I seem to have at least one spare hub in a drawer all the time, even after selling a couple.

Be sure to check your ceiling fan, if you have one of those glass dome fans that diffuse light and use these, make sure there's about an inch worth of extra space between the edge of the bulb and the dome diffuser thing. I just bought a bunch of these but I'm going to have to give up on one of my rooms in my apartment because they protrude too far out and will require either removing the glass dome or removing the sockets and letting them dangle.

Thanks for the post OP! I'm with you on this one as well. It's a very steep price for the limited light it can produce given its candle form factor, plus the need for many of them if you have a chandelier. Almost the cost of a new chandelier itself, and if it were regular price, it makes no sense anymore.
