I don't trust buying in-store gift cards with risk of them being tampered with. I had a bad experience with Target gift being empty when I tried to use it.

I believe that is dollar general specific because on a Lowes Giftcard deal last year, I was able to use my credit card. (I think it was chase with another percentage back).
