Experts say this will dull or ruin your blades. Short term solutions to a long term problem.

But it's made by the same reliable company that makes my yard tools lol

I watched the video for this product. It recommends 4 to 5 passes on the blade surface and then one pass on the other side to remove burrs.

This is more consistent with a honing steel than true sharpening. 4 to 5 passes isn't going to remove a meaningful amount of metal. If your garden tools are dulled or if there are nicks or damage to the blade, you need to be able to remove some metal to get sharpness back. This isn't going to do that. Furthermore, it requires a fair amount of skill to do this free hand and get all the angles right. It's not surprising to hear that people have ruined their tools with it.

For my regular knives , I use a WorkSharp MK2. However I found it also works great for sharpening lawnmower blades and a variety of other outdoor tools. I found it to be super easy and it produces great results without having to learn a challenging skill. It's pretty much idiot proof.

For $1 more, you can get a more versatile diamond coated steel sharpener. I use this one to sharpen my pruners and serrated knives.

Got one for $1 from temu few days ago just to try it out. Is this one a lot better?

Diamond coated 6" husky sharpener is $6.98 at home Depot.

Which works better?
How does ease of use compare?

I don't know for sure because I have not used the Husky version. Judging from the shape in the images, the Husky version has diamond coating on the broad flat surfaces. IMHO, it would be less nimble to navigate along the curved pruner blade. I would prefer the Smith's version because it has a narrow flat surface. The Smith version also has a pointy end to sharpen serrated knives.

I'd like to understand more about how this works, but there's plenty of microscopy out there that shows the V-shaped carbide sharpeners do indeed pull and rip metal parallel with the edge, and I've read that this effect is worse with harder steels and more pressure.
I don't know how to quote two posts in this new UI, but the other guy who talks about this working like a honing steel makes sense. If you apply enough pressure to actually remove metal, then logically you would be removing it by pulling and ripping: adhesion instead of abrasion. I do own one of these sharpeners, and I've never felt like I've accomplished much with it other than "steeling" - which can produce results on these softer steels.
