hook this up to a usb-c battery pack to keep on during the flight. go to your phone and connect to the router wifi address. then go through the standard process to logon to the GLI web portal address. then select the plane wifi. should pop up with the plane login. this works most of the time. this is great for multiple devices on a plane!

Was just about to post this. I've been waiting for it to return to this price again. Excellent router for travel.
Edit: See my reply. While I think the price could be lower, there are not many options for travel routers. With reduced competition, prices stay higher. This is generally regarded as the best WiFi 6 travel router.

sharing internet service is definitely a popular use case for travel router (think airline and mostly.. cruises).

but the best use case for me is to use the same network name as one i use at home, so when arrive a location, you just have one router to setup and all your device will connect as if you are at home.

I use one of these as my home firewall and backup wifi, after I got fed up with the hardware I was running OPNsense on. (I have a separate WiFi access point) As the Gen Z say, I'm obsessed with it. I installed native OpenWRT on it and it's easily able to keep up with my gig fiber internet, complex firewall rules, etc.

I'm going to keep it in this role for a few more months, and then switch to one of Gl.inet's Wifi 7 models. Then the Beryl AX will become an actual travel router for me.

This router has more functions and features. For our specific case, just to share Wifi on a few devices, I think Wifi sharing using Android suffice the need. However, some wants to use tethering to mobile data to by-pass hotspot data metering. Alternatively, some may want to have more devices behind the router or have VPN setup...etc.

My lawnmower can drive down the street too. Doesn't make it a car.

Some use cases / reasons:
  • You leave the hotel room, but your spouse still needs internet on her iPad
  • You game or edit video on your Pixel and it starts overheating (Pixels love to overheat)
  • You want to save your phone battery for your travel adventures
  • You want internet faster speeds and stronger WiFi than the phone can do
  • You have access to ethernet so you don't have to a WiFi->WiFi hop
  • You don't want to have to do the captive portal sign in every time you leave and return to your hotel with your phone

Probably not, but you can often pay once (for the router) and use it on all of your devices

I looked it up, and it's some form of wifi auth, but it sounds vague.

You can also download media to a flash drive, plug in the flash drive and stream it multiple devices. I did this worked great, ran it on a 10k mah battery pack on a 12 hr flight, no problem.

I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but using the stock OpenWRT (not Gl.inet's firmware version) I have cellular hotspot connected as a backup WAN device over USB. The hotspot gets internet over LTE and the router connects to it over USB instead of WiFi.

If my AT&T Fiber connection goes down the router detects that and switches over to hotspot. It took a bit of research and tinkering to figure out how to get that to work.
