Save up for something with a real burr where the cutting surfaces are actually sharp, instead of this thing here that doesn't really do a good job at all. Search for "false burr" online if you're curious why.

The venn intersection of people who are spending 30 bucks on a grinder and people who care about false burrs is not a lot.

As long as it's above zero. People like this do exist. For example: https://old.reddit.com/r/Coffee/c..._be_aware/

I still think this type of grinders is misleading and a waste of money and resources. It might be better to just stick with pre-ground coffee, or get a good entry level conical burr hand grinder like the Timemore C2, depending on how much coffee one consumes.

How much do you want folks to spend on a grinder when 90% of them are probably using a $30 drip machine lol

Can you make a couple of recommendations? Perhaps a good "starter level" option?

Can anyone comment on using this for spices? It would not be needed for coffee so cross contamination in that regard is not a concern.

Almost any cheap grinder can be used for spices. I've been using a 20 year old Black and Decker grinder I got at a garage sale and it works perfectly for peppercorns, cardamom, anise, cloves, etc. It does have a problem with nutmeg, but I tend to grate that by hand as you need to use it sparingly anyway.

I brew on a $7 plastic v60. For someone else that goes through coffee quickly enough to warrant a machine, there's no shame with pre-ground until you can save up for a real grinder.

Automatic, for drip: OXO, Capresso Infinity, Baratza Encore.

Automatic, for espresso: Encore ESP, MiCoffee D40+/DF54.

Manual: Timemore or 1zpresso. Many models at various price points to choose from. I'd probably stick to models focused on drip coffee since it takes significantly longer and more effort to grind for espresso.

I see some cheaper ones on Amazon with conical burrs. Some might be good value and worth trying if you have time to deal with returns.

No what I am saying is most won't care or even notice, they just want the cheapest thing that does it all for them.

Off the top of your head, do any brands / models have a glass holder for the bean and glass for the grind? Or maybe stainless steel?

I can't get my head wrapped around mid to high end coffee and plastic.

That's fair. At the same time why not just buy pre-ground coffee?

I don't think glass hoppers are common at all but I could be wrong.

Some of the hand grinders have aluminum body (so hopper and catch cup). The D40+'s hopper and catch cup are both aluminum I believe.

Because in a coffee thread someone told them grinding their own was better. So now they buy Folgers whole bean instead of crystals lol
