I was on the hunt from february to april at Homegoods and TJ Maxx for this but was never able to find it. I ended up going with the Bambino Plus $400 deal plus $200 Baratza ESP route.I was told the Baratza ESP grinder is still superior to the built in grinder for Barista Pro despite Breville upgrading the burrs in recent years.
According to Lance Hedrick they both use the same M2 burrs. But I don't like timed grinders, especially on the Barista line where the gradient of the hopper is too shallow to allow beans to flow freely, making inconsistency in the mass ground.
But with your setup, you get auto-frothing so its a better move IMO. Or get the Infuser for $400

Great machine except one problem. The coffee is not hot enough. Just luke warm. It only reaches 170 degree F max but then immediately drops the temperature once you are about to zip. Sent the machine to the service center to fix this problem, and it made no difference. So those who need real hot espresso coffee, this machine would disappoint them.
The level of heat of the Barista Pro is totally fine, most people complain about this thinking they have measured it but they don't account for pressure. Try:
  1. Leave your portafilter in the machine and let it heat for 15 minutes minimum
  2. Put your cup on top of the machine to preheat

"for the stock portafilter: before you insert a basket, remove the black plastic piece in the bottom by prying it out." - why did they insert it there? for what reason?I have this machine and I always use double dose basket - in my case I can remove it without any affect?
Lots of misinformation here. These machines advertise a very fast heatup time. When you heat up a higher end machine, the grouphead (what you stick the portafilter into) heats up, and with it the portafilter (you should always have this locked into the machine when not in use). So when your coffee comes out of the holes in the portafilter basket, they hit a warm metal bottom of the portafilter and the spouts.
In consumer machines with claimed fast heatup, without the plastic screen your coffee would drip out of the basket onto cold metal, which spoils the flavor and cools the shot (think pouring a drink onto ice). The plastic screen stops this much contact with the cold metal immediately after extraction
If you remove the plastic, make sure you place the empty portafilter into the machine and give it 10+ minutes to heat up before pulling a shot.

Is it worth upgrading if I currently have the express? Seems like this is a good price.
The Pro offers a much faster ThermoJet heating system (ready in 3 seconds), a more precise grinder with 30 settings, and a modern LCD interface with a shot timer. Milk steaming is also quicker and easier due to a better steam wand. These improvements make daily espresso preparation more efficient and consistent. While espresso quality is similar, the Pro's convenience and workflow enhancements provide significant value for frequent users or those seeking a smoother, faster coffee-making experience.BTW.. you can shop around multiple home goods, tjmaxx stores to get it for $500..

I would not buy a machine with a built-in grinder. Full stop.
These things have surprisingly good grinders

Have had this for two years now, and love it. This is a great price - lowest I've seen since I bought mine mid 2023.

Only addons I purchased: calibrated tamper and WDT tool. This came with everything I else you need (minus a kitchen scale which is required to dial in different beans.)

BTW, the stock portafilter comes with pressurized basket (tiny holes) and non. You should use the non-pressurized one with fresh grind.

Thanks for the tip, but I'm curious how the portal filter gets heated up when I leave it on the machine? Did you mean that I continuously should be pulling shots for 15 mins?

If you can find them. I've not had any luck in the Raleigh Durham or Northern Virginia area but I'm just casually looking, not going every week.

One notable difference:
With the Pro, there are no analog gauges to show pressure. Everything is timing (grind) and weight (beans before grind for single , or after grind for hopper, and shot weight.)

Enjoy your warm plastic taste or upgrade to the bottomless.
