Such a beast of a machine. Almost wish I could justify it

I got the pro version of this. My cpu and gpu are barely utilized on the pro. The ram definitely made a difference for me.

I would strongly look at any software you are planning to run before spending extra on the max. It not only cost more but your battery will take a hit.

I have the M2 Max version with 64GB of RAM and 2TB SSD with 246 tabs open and only 24% of RAM utilized. Great deal!

I really wish microcenter carried more silver versions because that space gray might look nice when you buy it but almost all of the videos I have seen with any long term use have chips off finishes near the ports and multiple scratches that you wouldn't notice on the silver.

I'm hoping Apple does some
Magic with M5 and makes it much faster to run LLMs. Especially the 70b + models. At this point even with 128GB memory just getting about 3 tokens per second which is too slow. Looking for 15 t/s 16 bit Smilie

I find that Mac better utilizes ram. So 48 on a Mac would be nearly equivalent to 56 or so on windows. That is just my personal experience. Overall they'll be pretty similar.

Where it really shines for me is without hacking my os is how many things can I permanently remove from my computer. Am I forced into updates when I'm hoping to work? This is where I definitely prefer Mac.

But then other side you have some large companies that just refuse to properly develop their stuff for macOS. Even Bambu uses windows to apply auto fixes. If you are on a Mac they will prompt you to use windows for repair. There are ways around this but there are unfortunately pros and cons to both OSs.
You can literally just turn off Windows updates... it's never going to forcefully reboot while working lmao

Does this feature soldered Ram, SSD and other components? That would be a deal breaker for me.

thanks.

Obviously a bait post, but you're a decade too late to the party.

The last Apple laptop I upgraded was a 17" maybe 20yrs ago to have a solid-state.

Does anyone know how ram usage compares in PC vs Mac with apps like Lightroom or programs like Final Cut / Davinici? I have 64gb on my PC laptop and a good % of it is regularly utilized with photo / video editing. Are macs typically 'efficient' or similar-ish in actual usage? It seems like MacOS has been less ram hungry than windows in the past, but it's not an easy topic to research without actually just buying it.
It really depends what you're using it for. The Mac utilizes the RAM for CPU and GPU. So, their RAM is faster than DDR5 but slower than GDDR7. If your laptop comes with dGPU, then that GPU will almost certainly be better than a Mac. A PC allows you to bulk up on RAM for far less money. And that allows you to run more applications. But the bandwidth on the Mac is really wide, allowing for a lot of throughput. So, at a price like this, the computer is purchased for the applications you're going to be using, not the other way around. Even your applications may limit themselves irrespective to how much system or video RAM they have. A machine like this would compete with workstation-class laptops that are certified to run certain applications. If you're buying it for browsing the web or editing simple photos and videos, you're wasting your money.

Would this be considered a limited stock item? I price matched with Best Buy yesterday, representative approved it. Today I got an email saying they cannot do the price match since they consider it a limited stock item

I used to be a mac fan, but these prices are just too damn high. Mac has always been high, but at least my last mac you could change the parts if necessary. Tim Cook is so sub par to steve jobs. Zero innovation, all just squeeze the customer. Jobs had vision, he knew what customers wanted. Cook is just a rainbow accountant with zero skills.

Cook's number one priority has been shareholders, and he's delivered handsomely. It's why people like me that would never touch an Apple product invest in the company.

FWIW I went into the store and got the silver one for the same price. The midnight black looked nice but I have read in many places that it doesn't wear as well as the silver. My last MacBook I bought in 2013 so I expect them to last a long time. Anything I can do to help with that, I'll do.
