Can I just use this ticket to stay in japan? I hear of people doing it, but Ive never done it and not sure how it works. Dont make the connecting flight and then head back to the airport on the supposed return flight to LA?

You can stay in Japan and don't use the flight to Vietnam. But on your return trip, you will need to checkin at Vietnam airport to checkin for your return trip. if not, airline will cancel you whole flight. I don't think you can just checkin at Japan airport.

I wouldn't recommend it, the airline will generally cancel the return ticket if you don't complete your outbound trip. You can do it on a one way flight but technically it violates the terms of your ticket. If you want to learn more about it Google skiplagging.

if you miss Japan to VN leg, the rest of the trip will get cancelled, so you will have to buy another ticket from Japan back to the US... I did this one time, but I skipped the very last leg of the return flight... so I flew from US to Japan to VN.. then from VN to Japan (no checking luggage).. stay in Japan for 5 days then Zip air back to US
