I've heard the XM5 have excellent noise cancelling, the noise cancelling here is just "ok". Benefit to these Yamahas is the excellent Yamaha sound quality and AptX Adaptive if you have supported hardware and want to game with them, with the advantage of Low Latency. I use them specifically with my Logitech G Cloud hardware that supports AptX Adaptive.

I've made such things. If the noise cancelling was perfect the zero sound results in zero energy to the ears, so no damage to the ears. Imperfect, then some sound and sound energy will get to the ears.
Ok yeah, you're right, the sound waves actually get cancelled out (it's in the name!). I presume there's no products that seal well enough/can handle dBs high enough to qualify as PPE. Have used ear plug PPE and they are brain ticklingly invasive, nobody would want to have their music player an inch deep into their ear canal.

Just got these delivered. Here are some observations:
Build quality is excellent. The case is comically huge. They look like cheap hearing aids when in-ear because they stick out 3/4". The earbuds are heavy, but relatively comfortable and feel secure in-ear. The touch controls can be finicky and usually lag.
I had a problem where one earbud would keep cutting in and out. A factory reset seemed to have fixed the problem at first, but it happened again after an hour. Maybe this issue is a one off specifically with these earbuds and my phone (Pixel 9 Pro).
Sound quality is great for podcasts and phone calls. Music has excellent clarity, but the sound is thin and lacks bass and depth.
For $60, I think these are good, but if you plan on using these for music, I wouldn't rate them highly. Music on my 5+ year old Samsung Buds+ sound noticeably better than these Yamahas.

One thing I forgot to mention in my previous comment. I had a difficult time getting a good seal with the included tips. Even when it seemed like I got it, it wasn't good enough. After experimenting with various tips I had laying around, I found a pair that works. They are no name silicone tips i bought off Amazon a while back to use with different earbuds. They didn't work that well with those but I really like them with these Yamaha buds. Interesting how that works.
Bass response is improved as well as noise canceling. They also stay in ears more securely.

You're kidding right. I just received these and these are the chonkiest earbuds I have ever owned. I feel like Frankenstein's monster with these satellite dishes hanging out of my ears. Anyone else surprised how chonky these are?

Edit: I found a solution to the dropout issue. Download and install the Yamaha app on your phone and then connect the earbuds.
In the app go into settings (the sprocket icon) and disable "In-Ear Detection". Apparently that feature turns them off if it senses it's not in an ear. However, it's too sensitive and so it turns off if you touch it to reposition it or just jostle it around in your ear.
This is what Yamaha says about it in the Specs: "In-Ear detection conveniently pauses your play list when you remove either earbud."
