ATT requires 60 days active before unlocking the phone. However, there is SIM Swap method which worked well in the past for unlocking paid-off ATT phones right away.
0. Do the following steps after paying off the phone fully and then waiting for a day or so for the unlock portal to get the paid off status.
1. ATT changed their unlock policy on 3/18 to require 60 days of service before they can unlock a fully paid device. Previously, it used to be right away if you have paid in full.
2. There two timeline for the cancellation. If you cancel a line before 3 days it was active then the activation fee is waived. If you cancel it within 14 days from activation under buyers remorse then no bill is charged but activation fees need to be paid. The line activates on right when you place the order not the day you receive the phone on hand so you might have to pay the activation fee of $35.
3. You can use a tello number and port to ATT but you would have to make sure porting is successful by going to https://www.att.com/portstatus/. Many from z fold 3 got stuck in porting limbo and got the ATT account cancelled.
4. As with many deals here, a SIM swap method is found which can be used to unlock the device. This was working recently but not sure if ATT would fix it by the time you try it. The steps are as follows.
a. Pay in full for the phone. While your payment will quickly reflect in your account it will be at least a few hours before it updates for the unlock request.
b. When you receive the phone activate it on ATT with the SIM provided. Make sure it shows up on myATT app/in the web so ATT knows and registers the IMEI in the network. Then put the SIM in another unlocked phone, reboot, make some calls and make sure this unlocked phone is now showing under the line in app/web portal.
c. Now go to ATT unlock portal https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ and then choose not an ATT customer and use the IMEI of ATT phone and submit an unlock request.DO NOT attempt more than twice or you will be blocked for 24 hours.
d.Confirm the unlock request email and receive the unlock code.
e. Only cancel the line after you have unlocked the phone.
Then after unlocking if you are feeling adventurous and want to flash the phone to an unlocked firmware to get rid of ATT bloat you can follow these steps. It's actually very easy to do with Odin.
1. There are many models of s22 ultra but in US two models are imp. S908U is carrier locked version and S908U1 is the unlocked US version. The firmware for these versions are interchangeable so you can flash the ATT model with S908U1 firmware.
2. Download patched odin v3.14.1_3B_PatchedD.zip from https://xdaforums.com/t/patched-o...1.3762572/ as regular odin does not allow flashing mismatched firmware.
3. Download the firmware from S908U1 XAA version from https://samfrew.com/model/SM-S908U1/region/XAA/ Extract as there will be multiple files.
4. Connect S22U to the windows PC.
5 .Put s22u in download/recovery/odin mode. Power down. Press Volume up and down together and then press Volume up to go into recovery (a green screen would appear).
6. Start odin and then select different files for different categories and then start.
7, It should be now the US unlocked version.
Finally i received end of 3rd day. it was memorial day holiday when i ordered hence the delay. Was able to cancel it 4th day. Will likely get bill including the activation fee which will see if can get waived . Thanks OP

I see the Sim swap unlock trick with At&t, is there something similar with Verizon or must I wait the 60 days no matter what?
Is flashing firmware required to use the T-life app? And does either At&t or Verizon version have more/less bloatware?

I think ATT one is out of stock so your only option is Verizon now.
"AT&T fiber" on chase offers got triggered when doing the Full payment of the phone. Additional $50 saved
Could have saved more if I could know before and split it across multiple cards.
Out of stock online, maybe. There are physical stores with them in stock.
1. If the service is canceled within 3 days, no activation fee will show up on the final bill.
2. If the service is canceled after 3 days of activation, there will be a courtesy credit and the credit will be reflected in next bill. If a statement credit is issued to a closed account, a refund check will be mailed to the account holder's address.
However, the rep was unsure whether or not we need to contact ATT for a refund check or if it is going to be an automated process.
Edit: Also read last few pages of one plus Nord n30 deal I linked in one of the pinned comment.
just got off the phone with ATT. They dont know what is going on with the phone so they told me they will cancel everything. Ontrac wasn't helpful at ALL!! so screw them.
I guess this deal was not meant for me. ah well
Has anyone tried getting 2 lines from 1 account and paying them off without any issue?
I might have to create an account using my spouse's details

Do I need to walmart or Verizon now ?
So i guess the million dollar ( or $432) question is, is this a "free" phone or am i going to get a bill from AT&T somehow down the line...
If you are able to unlock the device normally, the at least one part of the ATT backend things you don't owe anything for the device. My bet is you won't get back into DPP, you can also check with various IMEI checkers.

You can upgrade the same line for the s24 plus order after paying off s24u and doing SIM swap etc. If alll goes well you should be done by 14 days of buyer's remorse for cancelling ATT line. Note the activation fee can be voided instantly even after 3 days, see my pinned comment.

I have seen many times and others can verify that the activation fee credit is instant as one time courtesy (even after 3 days) so I am surprised that activation fee is not credited to your account instantly if you had clicked on that link. I can't say about the refund check, it's possible it will arrive but given it's ATT I wouldn't bank on it.

6/1: I bought a Verizon S24 Ultra.
6/6: The phone arrived. I activated the eSIM and calls worked.
6/6: I went to a Verizon store to pay for the phone in cash. The employee told me I couldn't pay off the device for 30 days. She then did something in the Verizon app on my phone, and my calls and messages stopped working right after.
I then deleted the eSIM (this was my mistake).
I thought I had to cancel the line within 3 days to get the activation fee waived. Since I activated it on 6/6, I assumed I had until 6/8.
But I checked the estimated bill and it said the activation date was 6/5. I asked a chat agent, and they also said my number was activated on 6/5.
6/7:
- 9:30 AM: Chatted with Verizon to restore the eSIM.
- 11:20 AM: They told me to go to a store with my ID. When I asked to just cancel the line, they said I have to return the phone.
- 12:00 PM: I went to a different Verizon store. They couldn't activate the eSIM because the phone was locked. They asked where I bought it, and I said Walmart. They told me to go to Walmart to reactivate the esim. I asked if I could pay off my phone there, but they said no.
- 1:50 PM: I went to Walmart. They couldn't help and said I needed to go to a Verizon corporate store (not a retail one) and ask for a physical SIM.
- 3:10 PM: I got to the corporate store and waited 50 minutes. They switched my eSIM to a physical SIM.
I asked if I could pay for the device, and they said yes. I paid for it in cash. The employee then said since my phone was now paid off (BYOD), he could cancel my line and open a new one to change my plan from $75/month to $55/month with a new promotion. He said the activation fee for this would be waived with a credit.
I asked about the bill for the first line. He said it would "probably be waived."
I'm now waiting for that bill of the first line.
