Apple charges a huge premium for upgrades - for the vast majority of normal users, the $450 16GB/256GB Mac Mini is by far the best deal. In 2 years or so just trade it back in to Apple for $200-$300 back, and get the latest $450 Mac Mini M7 or whatever for the difference.

Good deal. I was happy to pay $929 on April 4. I wanted the overpriced upgrades from Apple and was happy to pay for them. I love the computer, as will you, whether you get this configuration or the basic.
This is interesting - the MBA M3 13" same size RAM same size SSD is $50 more. You get a faster chip with better cooling but lose the screen, input devices, and battery.
Edit:
The mini also has more I/O and storage that's easier to upgrade.

I have seen people cobble together portable solutions with portable monitors and battery packs. Way clunkier but works.
