Apple charges a huge premium for upgrades - for the vast majority of normal users, the $450 16GB/256GB Mac Mini is by far the best deal. In 2 years or so just trade it back in to Apple for $200-$300 back, and get the latest $450 Mac Mini M7 or whatever for the difference.

Good price compared to Apple's MSRP but +8gb ram and +256gb should not be costing $400 over the base model in 2025 lol

Hey do you think now is a good time to pull the trigger on a Mac mini! Or wait for further price drops?

I'm a software engineer and I have no issues using the mac mini for coding. Infact the company gives us m3 laptops. So the m4 is way more powerful them the m3. I work for one of the big five tech companies.

No, the base model is exactly the same cores as this. Go look: https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-mac/mac-mini/m4

I just bought the 16gb version for 450 and upgraded the internal SSD to 2TB and I couldn't be happier. About 700 all said and done.

Apple historically doesn't drop prices quite this much, so $599 -> $450 is unusual, and the +200 for RAM and +200 for SSD takes it to $850, which is about what this is, and getting those upgrades with the $450 price considered is unusual too.
The upcoming back to school specials should save another couple bucks off Edu pricing, but that only takes you to about this level here (if not slightly more), so I don't expect much better than this in the near term.

Not coming with anything over a Terabyte of storage should be a crime.
Come on, you can get a portable thunderbolt 4 SSD for like 70$ these days which would have no difference compared to the internal one. Also storage is actually upgradeable on these, a 1TB SSD costs 90$ or so and is an easy 30 min upgrade. So storage is actually not a problem at all. Ram on the other hand is still no upgradeable

For the vast majority of users, they don't need to upgrade for at least 8 years. I have 14 year old desktop running i7 2600k and a 9 year old MacBook Air and I just finished medical school. So don't fall for it if your kids need the latest top of the line for undergrad or for you YouTube/Netflix, word processors, simple video/photo edit and email tasks.

I'd rather buy 2 base model M4 Minis for $900.

Real question: does the 512gb integrated storage run faster than the 256gb chipset?

Fully agree. But future proofing is a myth; just buy what you need now, and when Apple releases something that you gotta have later, trade the mini in to Apple for a few hundred bucks and get the next base model. Don't buy expensive upgrades; as ratbastard said, better to get TWO minis rather than this needless (for most) upgrade.

When did storage become expandable for Arm based Apple device?

I go the Linux/BSD route but people that have software use cases or just don't want to think about their OS can go apple hardware. Id find the battery life of the laptops more compelling than the mini but to each their own
Windows imo is a dumpster fire
