Yeah my old server is running a 3900x and this would be a nice boost to help it last even longer.

I run a 5700X and it is never my bottleneck at any resolution while gaming. Does well for music and video production too. This is more CPU than 99% of people need, so it's a great option if you're already on AM4.

Would feel weird to upgrade from a 12 core 5900X to 16 core 5900XT. Why didn't they name this a 5950 non-X?

I wouldn't mind upgrading just for the heck of it, but I think I'll target a 9000 series CPU with 800 series chipset and DDR5, just to get the generational benefits of memory, USB 4, PCIe 5, etc.

Of course I'd also want a new graphics card, and that's where I give up. Frown

Now that we have had AM5 for a while I'm glad I stayed on AM4 and last year upgraded to a 5700x3d. I still hear of weird stability issues on AM5, weird booting procedures especially depending on the kind of memory you're running. I hear it's gotten a lot better, but some of the issues I hear from lots of people is the kind of stuff I would try to avoid, I don't have any of those issues on AM4 at all. It's been solid.

Am4 had it's own problems such as memory compatibility issues. I had a 2600x that was very fussy even seeing sticks of ram, much less full advertised speed.

Yeah, plus graphic cards performance per dollar ratio has either stagnated or gone down over time so that also contributes to lack of need to upgrade. If anything laptops have advanced much more relative to pcs, with pressure from apple m chips and snapdragon pushing Intel and amd to make more power efficient chips.

What a great deal, but what kind of cooling solution would I need to use? A conventional dual-fan air cooler like the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE or a liquid cooler with radiator?

Oh, and, since I'm using these on servers, what kind of graphics card (preferably without a fan) should I get?

You know high end ddr4 sticks will outperform low to mid ddr5

Phantom spirit is a bit better than peerless assassin but they both should be fine for this..it's not high wattage

I upgraded from a 5900x to a 9900x (business/tax write-off). I wouldn't recommend that upgrade to most. AM4 is much more stable than the AM5 stuff. It's impressive tech, but it's also much more a mess of tech nuances. I was having BSODs for weeks until finally a new Bluetooth/Wi-Fi driver, of all things, was released. I lucked out with memory (really good timings on 2x32GB), but I hear a lot of people have issues there, as well. And don't get me started on how terrible BIOS stability was a few months ago!

I have a stable system now, but even so, it's not wildly faster than my 5900x box is, which is still pulling its weight.
