If you have a fairly recent router that has a USB 3.0 port, you might be able to get away with just plugging the drive into that and configuring it to be shared over the network.

I had wondered the same thing, and now I have two 4 bay NAS enclosures plus 1 4 bay expansion with 2 8tb raid 1s, a 14tb raid 1, a 20tb raid 1 and a raid 10 w/ four 4tb drives. it is a slippery slope lol

It's hard to tell what's inside one these 20+ TB Seagate externals. The very early ones may have had Seagate Exos or Ironwolf in them, and those are great for shucking, but lately people have been finding Barracuda drives in them and the most I'll say is the jury is undecided on how reliable they might be. They typically are rated for far fewer work hours (mtbf) but since they're pretty new, who really knows. Personally, I avoid them because I don't want to find out. I instead will look at a recertified drive from serverpartdeals.

Just double checked and the router I was given (GFiber Wi-Fi 6E Router (GR6EXX0C)) has a Blue USB-A Port, which I believe is a 3.0). I have a 1TB external drive that I might test this out with before spending $250 on a 22TB model.
If it works, it's a good option for basic network storage. You should be able to plug a USB hub into it as well, and connect multiple drives if needed. However, since your router can be managed remotely by your ISP, there is a potential security risk connecting your data to it. To get around that you can repurpose an old/used router that has the USB port and put that behind your ISP router, and ensure your network shares are password protected, or have adequate firewall rules to prevent the ISP router from snooping on it.
If you're looking for additional features like media server, apps, etc., then you'd be looking at a NAS or other DIY solutions.

How and when?

Seagate website usually rotates their on sale every week, usually Mondays. The 22TB was a $239 about 3 weeks ago. There's also a email sign up coupon for 10% when you go to their website. It's a pop-up and it's random, disable ad blockers for the site.

Shuckable? Yes or no

Reliable drive? Or it's a Seagate...
got this from seagate directly last month for about $215 w/ 10% coupon.
Shucked it and put it in DAS. It's barracuda. Working fine so far.

the 10 bay sabrent one that was posted here maybe 12-18 months ago for $400 (600 msrp)
I like it, but a common complaint is that it does not power itself back on after power outage (I have UPS, but still, it could be an issue)

If you are new to NAS, a 2 bay would suffice but I recommend going with a 4 bay QNAP, UGREEN, Asustor or Synology for future expansion.
Why not Western Digital?

I've been shopping for a large external HDD to backup my laptop, phone, and media. This seems like a great deal for the amount of storage, but I've also been considering a NAS. Would a NAS be overkill? I like the idea of not having to physically plug in my devices to backup and potentially have a network accessible drive of media, but I have no idea where to start. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Crucial for any backup plan is the software and whether it can be automated. I used to try to backup my devices with an external drive, and I found that finding good software is a major headache (that I never resolved). My backups were always out of date, and the whole process was actually kind of useless. I was even willing to pay for software, but finding a solution that continuously backed up my files without filling a hard drive was surprisingly hard.
I've come to the conclusion that either you backup just your most important files (photos and some documents for the average person) on the cloud (Amazon Photos, Google Photos, Google Drive, OneDrive, etc) for a recurring cost or you get a NAS. NAS machines have software for snapshot backups, especially if you go the Synology route (more expensive but it just works, easily). NB: Synology has gone to the dark side and requires you buy all drives from them at inflated cost. If you're super technically inclined and willing to stay on top of it, I'm sure an external drive can be made to work, but for most people it just isn't a real plan.
So I would recommend a NAS or use cloud storage. This is a decent option for the "1" of a complete 3-2-1 backup solution where you backup your NAS and keep it off site, or just leave it plugged in and live with the risk of the house burning down and losing everything if you can stomach it. In other words, it makes a backup of your NAS once a month and is kept at work or at a family member's house. For primary backup, stick to a NAS for a significant up-frount cost or cloud storage for a recurring cost.

Let us know how it turns out. I'm always leery of buying from 3rd party sellers on Amazon.

I didn't realize that was an option. I just had Google Fiber set up last month, which included a router.
The ATT router I received has the USB port but current is inactive. I do have a separate router with a drive on my network, and I'm able to connect to it from a lot of different devices.

I suppose this deal is more attractive, since it has the same price per GB, but sold directly by Seagate
