Consumers with the recalled air conditioners should immediately contact Midea for a free repair or a full or prorated refund, which will be based on the purchase date or date of manufacture.

Consumers who want a refund will be requested to send the unit back to Midea using a free shipping label or submit a photograph showing that they cut the unplugged power cord of the unit to receive a refund.

Consumers who want a repair should contact Midea to arrange for a technician to install a new drain plug or send consumers a repair kit that includes a new drain plug and bubble level, depending on the model. Consumers who continue using the air conditioners while awaiting a repair should visit www.MideaUrecall.expertinquiry.com for instructions on how to inspect their unit prior to continuing use.

Incidents/Injuries:
The firm is aware of at least 152 reports of mold in the air conditioners, including 17 reports of consumers experiencing symptoms such as respiratory infections, allergic reactions, coughing, sneezing and/or sore throats from mold exposure.

I own a recalled model. I always wonder why there is no water dripping from A/C when it is on.

Midea U and U+ Window Air Conditioner Recall

Not a deal but figured to point out as this A/C has been posted many times (and frontpage many times). Sold at many retailers like Costco, Home Depot, etc....

I have one myself and can confirm the fan that blows air into the room is coated in mold.

Not really a deal, but posting for information:

Consumers who have one of the listed models should participate in the recall immediately. For consumers who choose a repair, Midea will provide a technician to install a new drain plug or send consumers a repair kit that includes a new drain plug and bubble level, depending on the model. Consumers who continue using the air conditioners while awaiting a repair should visit www.MideaUrecall.expertinquiry.com for instructions on how to inspect their unit prior to continuing use.

For consumers who choose a refund, the company will instruct you to either (1) unplug the product, cut the power cord, and write "Recalled" on the product, submit photographic evidence of doing so, and dispose of it in accordance with your local waste disposal requirements; or (2) return the unit to Midea using a free pre-paid label.

Discussion started on #224 (but buried):

Personally, with 3 units (8K, 10K, 12K), I find the recall not very satisfactory. If you return the unit, you get a pro-rated refund. The "fix" does not address any mold on the blower fan.

So does cord cutting get one a full refund vs pro-rated?

IDK but probably a pro-rated refund, unless it's a very recent purchase.

Here's an article about someone who's already submitted a refund, which has a lot of info:

https://nymag.com/strategist/arti...-2025.html

He had a 3 yr old 8K unit and was refunded $305 on a $350 purchase. YMMV

I bought the MAW12AV1QWT-C 12k model on 4/9/25 at the Costco in Plano, TX. When I select this model and enter my serial number, the recall website says that my a/c unit is NOT affected by this recall. I'm curious if any other people who purchased their 12k units this spring from Costco also found out that they were NOT affected?

I have the same model and was accepted for recall. You should call them.

Re-check your input.

Costco's current model (no longer sold) is the 12th item listed under Midea models on the Midea website.

what a nightmare

and note the refunds are pro-rated based on when purchased

mine is from 2022

I was wondering why there were black dots of mold on the exhaust and no way to take it apart to clean the roller fan

no way their hired techs are going to be properly trained or do a proper job, it's going to be kids working at minimum wage not giving a damn

Here is a youtube video about the experience.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaFoopNWfA0

summary for the refund option:
1. You need to upload a photo of the unit with cord cut, which seems to be quite tedious
2. They use some sort of AI to analyze your photo
3. You will get a prepaid visa, similar to those rebates

My 12k from the Indiegogo campaign is thankfully included in the recall and eligible for the full refund. This has been an issue since 2020 and the DIY hacky way to sort of resolve it was to drill a small hole in the bottom to let it drain out. I assume this repair kit will be little more than a drain hole, but I'm not ready to give up on this thing yet, even though cutting the cord certainly doesn't make it unusable trash. It's been a great unit the whole time.

Thanks for posting! I received the notice from Amazon for 2 units purchased in 2022. Both my units had extensive mold (like barnacles) which I have cleaned several times. I was shocked that the Midea site says my serial number is not part of the recall! The model is 1st on the list MAW08V1QWT!
