As someone prone to supination (foot tends to roll outward) I returned this shoe immediately as it was clearly not designed for me.

Yeah, all of their shoes that look like they carved a trench out of the middle of the midsole (Infinity RN4, Winflo 11, etc.) have the same problem – majorly unstable in the heel; fortunately they fixed it with the Pegasus 41.

Okay. A few things on this version of the Pegasus 5 Trail. I'm a runner with 20+ years of experience from 5ks to 100 milers...road, trails, mountains.

1. Gore Tex in running shoes is a waste for a few reasons.
a. It's virtually impossible to keep water out of a running shoe unless you have waterproof gaiters. Hit a puddle? Voila. Water is going to get into your shoe if it splashes at all. If it's anything deeper than a puddle, water is going to into your shoe. Wearing waterproof pants? When that rain beads up and runs down your pants, guess where it's going to wind up? Getting in your shoe.
b. Once water is in, it doesn't come out. Unlike traditional "mesh" uppers in running shoes, the water has nowhere to go except stay in your shoe and socks. With an open mesh upper (most road shoes), the water is going to drain from the shoe and your socks pretty well (see the next point).
c. Gore Tex doesn't breath very well at all. It's gotten A LOT better than maybe 10 years ago. I dare you to wear a pair of Gore Tex running shoes in anything over about 50 degrees. Your socks and feet are going to hate you real quick.
d. In my experience Gore Tex is good for running shoes if and only if you are running on hard packed snow.

2. The Pegasus Trail 5 is NOT designed for highly technical trails. I've worn them on technical trails. They will work for an hour or two sure, but so will a lot of shoes. it doesn't have a rock plate or toe cap. It doesn't have much in the way of overlays on the upper to protect your foot from rocks, add durability, etc. The lugs (bottom) aren't deep enough for highly technical trails.

3. The Pegasus Trail 5 is a great shoe for road to trail runs. It functions really well on both the road (Keep in mind, it's going to be a firmer ride than the non trail version of the Pegasus just due to the different trail outsole) and lighter trails.

I have a few pairs of the Trail 4s and 5s. It's a fantastic shoe for casual wear, lighter trails, some road running, travel. As always, YMMV, and what works for one person (me) may not work for you and vice versa.

Love this write-up. I am 100% not a trail runner but I walk my dog for 1hr+ every day and she drags me through wet grass, muddy park pathways and wet sidewalks on rainy days. I'm always on the lookout for waterproof shoes that are not exclusively road runners and inadvertently end up in the trail shoe category, even though I'm not running trails. This one seems to fit the bill, especially at this price.

I got a pair, needed a travel GTX shoe that doesn't look like I'm hiking but can go hiking but mostly when I travel to other cities. I walk a ton and if it rains ..I'm good

I'm not running, just walking around looking at BS
