i'm not a fan of these since there is a piece of frame across the bottom. this could be a tripping hazard, especially at the top of stairs

fair point, but I assume that, in order to avoid that, you would have to drill holes, so the sides of the gate would be attached to the wall?
Agreed that this might be inconvenient at the top of the stairs, which is where I wanted to use it...

Agreed, we returned ours because it was too much of a tripping hazard at the stairs. That, and we had a larger roommate at the time so did not want the liability.

We opted for the retractable barriers and those worked out great.

I consulted my lawyer and my insurance company it was too much of a liability as well the step over of .2 inches was greater than the preferred .3 inches

Realizing this is a completely different price point and requires actual wall attachment, but I went with these for my stairs as I never found a retractable gate i actually trusted for guarding my stairs. A bit over the top? Perhaps. Do I have any concern at all about the safety of my kids with these? None.
