This is absolutely not true. I stay all across the country at random times most I've seen average are around 20K a night. 30K being for higher ends and 10K Lower end. I am a Diamond spire
I am not a Diamond Spire and I have attached an example disproving your claim.
One Night stay, not in NYC, at 96,000 points for a 2.5 rated hotel. I also added more 40,000 points hotels.

46,000 points is: 460.00 USD

You picked NYC an example to debunk doesn't help. I used to live there. There are plenty of deals there as well. I have been point watching and collecting since 2010. I literally travel for work. Most of my stays I've gotten anywhere range from 10k a night to 30k locations and dates depending. Sure there are plenty of explosive ones but you're also not putting into perspective that some/most hotels range from $75-$125 Decent higher ends can range upwards of over $200 a night. This is all relative not overpriced. Expensive hotels require more points per night
