Wondering the same thing. Debating on this vs the Hisense 8,000 btu from Costco for $220.

I can comment about the 8k Hisense from Costco. I bought one and then bought two more a few weeks later I liked it so much. We had a record hot day in southern New England and I got to test it out…basically as hot as it gets here in the worst part of August and it performed just fine. I ran the numbers against a conventional 8k BTU AC using a smart plug and the Hisense's energy monitor as part of the app and I figure with my energy rates it would take about 2 seasons before it pays for itself. But it's also much quieter and has a smart app that's programmable. One feature I thought was cool is the automations can factor in the weather e.g. if it's hotter than 80 then set my room temp to 62 vs 66 for any other time. My only minor complaint is I would hope I could get it to integrate into Home Assistant.

It's fine for a non-inverter AC (which runs quieter than traditional ACs, but more expensive).
As for BTU, basically higher BTU can cool a larger space, but is heavier and pulls more electricity.
Look at the max watts - if you happen to stick a high wattage AC on an electrical circuit that's loaded (also has tv, pc, etc plugged in), if all that exceeds 1500 watts~, expect things to blackout or cause trouble. Only means you can run the A.C., but you will have to turn off the other devices if the big AC is running hard.
There are those that get into efficiency. A mismatched btu vs room.size, ie. Too much btu for a tiny room, will result in the ac turning on and off all day long. But realistically, if you don't mind that, whatever.
(Inverter ACs can ramp up and down continuously, so adjust better without turning on and off.)

Hmm very interesting comparison. Thank you for the input! Inverter style may be worth the energy savings.
I was using the 8k Midea U air conditioner in our bedroom until the recent recall. The Hisense seems similar to the Midea, or maybe made by the same manufacturer. My only concern is if it can accumulate mold as quickly as the Midea did. I know your technically supposed to inspect or clean any AC as per maintenance, so maybe it's just in my head haha.

Ty for this knowledgeable response. I'm looking for a window unit (or any recommendation type of aircon) just for a small living room area, do you what BTU i would need? Or know of a guide somewhere? Thanks.

It will depend on where you live, what direction your windows face, how good your windows are, and of course square footage. This site claims to estimate it for you:

https://www.calculator.net/btu-calculator.html

If you own, you might consider a mini-split system instead.

Hey I got mine recently as well. I was able to integrate it to home assistant via the matter integration. It only gives you super basic controls (cool or off), but it's at least something.

That's super helpful, thank you! That should be good enough…I already have temp sensors in the rooms anyway which tend to be more accurate as they are strategically located.

Yes, for central air conditioning systems, which this is most certainly not.
