I've always wondered how these would work printing off Amazon return labels. Their return labels dont seem to be in a format that would be friendly for these types of printers

I have this premium rollo printer and it simply shows up as ordinary printer devices.
I think they end up being serials devices regardless of connection type and most shipping system can handle it.
Note that this is not specific to Amazon, it is integrated to UPS, USPS and FedEx system as Amazon is not a shipper(other than shipping their own e-commerce).
If you just occasionally print return shipping label as buyer, you can still use it, just not as convenient, you may need specialized software such as label live to change the orientation and paper size because windows built-in printing function sucks.

I don't get it. If it bypasses the thermal printer's app or interface, can't we just adjust print paper section, or print size, or % zoom of an image/document, inside any device's or browser's native print dialogue window? I do this regularly with desktop and mobile for both Mac & Windows.

From what I am aware of, you need more than that because the specialized software will do DPI scaling, convert fonts/graph to vector/raster format(This is not an issue with normal printers but do make a difference for thermal printers with relatively low DPI), certain thermal printers with cutter/continuous label gap alignment(so you don't print between the gaps where labels separates between each other on the roll after a few prints) also requires special commands to be sent along with the print job.

They are not but I save the labels as a PDF then use Adobe Acrobat to crop to just the barcode and just the "return inventory items" in separate pages and print the two labels using my Zebra thermal label printers. Still better than printing on letter sized paper then cutting or folding

Save the 10$. 203 dpi is standard and more than enough for labels. Unless you plan to use for something other than labels.

FYI the standard rollo thermal printer is also 203 dpi.
