No comment on the price, but this is THE Blu-ray player to get, regardless of your needs.

It is the cheapest model of blu-ray player that doesn't freeze on 4K discs.

I've heard that only benefit of this vs the UB420 is Dolby Vision and analog audio inputs, never heard about any freezing for 4k discs on the 420.

That's not true. The Panasonic UB 450 is also good, has Dolby Vision, and doesn't freeze up. The 450 has an MSRP of $200 vs $400 for the UB 820.

I bought 2 cheaper players before eventually spending stupid money on a flagship pioneer. Maybe the cheaper players aren't freezing as much as they used to but regardless of what you get I'd watch the heck out of it in the first 30 days or return period.

I agree with you. I spent $150 on my 4K player at most. In the old days these things would have decreased to under $100 like regular bluray and vhs players once did. This is too much to pay.

Yeah, but sadly a lot of places stopped selling physical movies so companies stopped investing into making better/new 4K Blu-ray players which means prices won't go down much. I think Sony and Panasonics are the only good ones to get, but between both Panasonics wins (even tho both make scenes look amazing in 4K) due to not having that issue Sony has that I mentioned.

Correct, the Optimizer does so well with HDR the difference between DV is often not that big in my experience.
Not to mention not all disc offer DV.

Keep in mind the 450 doesn't offer their HCX chipset or Optimizer.
Not every disc offers DV also.
Those are the main reasons(other than not freezing) why Panasonic is liked.

From experience I would give up DV before giving up those two.
The 420 has hit $150 but it's been a while.

Well technically they don't have the same "specs".
Sony doesn't offer HCX chipset or Optimizer.
Panasonic doesn't support/offer SACD/DVD-A disc playback.

If your Sony doesn't freeze consider yourself lucky.
The Panasonic is better but not for that price difference, assuming you got on the low sale price.
Not to forget you have to manually turn on/off DV! Censored

The more likely reasons of no new or lower price is there is nothing to add/change.
Current commercial displays can't even take full advantage of HDR let alone DV/HDR10+.
How often do we hear people say just let your display do the processing/tone mapping.
How often are people going to digital purchases instead of disc nowadays.

Imo WE tell these companies we don't need anything new.

FYI Rumor has it Sony is coming out with a new player soon.

I got an LG on clearance many years ago for $50 I believe? I've never had it freeze, and the picture is fantastic.
