Tipping is not required but it's expected. So it's probably best to look at this as a "tip offset" rather than a pure discount.

As far as prices go, Costco via Instacart, with a Costco membership linked to your instacart, has prices about13% higher than in store. It's about double that if you do not have a Costco membership but still use instacart. Costco Same Day also inflates pricing but I don't recall by how much.

I tip the same for both. Since same day is run by instacart you are basically getting the same pool of drivers.

Costco Same Day has a flat 17% on every item (unless the item is over ~$76 since the max that can be taken off an item is $13). Shipping is always free on orders $35+

Instacart's markup is about 10% per item if you link your Costco membership. Delivery and service fees are quite high unless you are an Instacart+ member. Generally, instacart has some sort of targeted offer that resets every week, too.

Finally. Add curbside pickup and mobile device checkout and welcome to the 21st century.

Self checkout at Costco is only useful if you have 1-2 grocery items. Between having to unpack your cart, pack it into the tiny checkout area, then pack it back into cart it's just not worth it. I exclusively use self checkout at normal grocery stores multiple times a week including with full carts. The costco one just sucks.

Sam's scan and go is the only reason I will go to Sam's on a weekend, when the check out lines here are so long that I avoid them.

Around half of Costco members are Executive level so I don't expect a dramatic difference especially since many Exec members will intentionally go during that hour to theoretically avoid crowds which could have the opposite effect.
Best to just go in the evening anyways. I go around 6 PM and there's no lines for gas and it's pleasant walking around in there. Go during the day and you can't even move your cart inside, and forget about all the people that just stop and block those aisles that aren't wide enough to accommodate more than a cart.

Costco is killing it now. Just think how much they would be killing it if they somehow addressed the crowd issue. I have been dying to join for years, but I'll be honest in that I don't want to deal with the crowds. Also in my state there is 1 Costco near me and it's the worst designed parking lot I have ever seen. For these 2 reason I've never joined. Shame.
By the way, the 10% markup for each item for the Instacart fee is crazy.

I was at a Costco this Monday morning for the grand opening of the executive member's hour between 9 - 10 am. It was very nice. Filled up at Costco gas with no line. Then got a parking spot on the first row next to the building at 9:15 am. That almost never happens unless one arrives before opening time. The fewest crowd that I've seen except when past closing time. They had a table near the entrance with free breakfast pastries, coffee, juice for the occasion. But the best thing was no waiting at the return merchandise line. I will make that a habit going in that hour. Executive membership is definitely worth it.
BTW I don't use Instacart. It is a rip-off even with the $10 credit.

You should have no trouble getting to $150 once a month. If not, Costco membership is not for you. Don't try to buy just one pack of toilet paper.

Email from Instacart yesterday:
"The savings that Instacart+ members get on Costco Same-Day are changing. As of June 30, 2025, Instacart+ members will save up to 3.5% (previously up to 7%) compared to non-Instacart+ members on every Same-Day order. Instacart+ savings reduce item markups used to pay for Instacart delivery services."
So the $10 off $150 combined with this is still a net loss for us

The Costco self checkouts I go to have scan guns. I hardly pull anything out of my cart. Meanwhile I see people taking out big/heavy items and try to find where the UPC is while scanning them! As long as you set things in your cart in an organized manner and have the UPCs set in a way they're easy to scan self check out is a breeze Big Grin

On the deal, ya, I thought this may be better. Seems I still won't be using Same Day!

Mine has a scan gun, but you still need to place the item in the weight area or call an employee to override.

No way this is a hot deal or front page worthy.

This reminds me. I need to cancel my membership. Their website and app are a crime against humanity. Their elevated prices online vs in-store are theft. And their additionally elevated pricing for delivery is insane, after they charge you for delivery + tip and membership.

Meanwhile, I get free delivery from Sam's for the same price in-store, if it's $50. And if it's over $35, I can do a free pickup at the store. And if it's under $35, I can do a scan-and-go on the app and just walk in and out of the store without stopping in any line.

The price of food is already insane. If I had to rely on Costco I'd be starving to death right now. I find that a mix of Lidl for eggs/dairy/some protein and Sam's is the best way to stay fed/healthy and not get raped.

Yup. Totally. For costco, I'm gonna have them check me out. I went through self check out once and a worker barged in to scan staff for me and they forgot to scan stuff; wasted hella time at customer service to fix it. Now i just go through the regular line.

Dammit you are right. But I think about rush hour traffic and get turned off about going in the evenings. I just upgraded now so I can early Saturday or Sunday morning.
